Help picking out first GPSr

Recommended Posts

I have been caching with my Palm Pre which works.... till you need it to be accurate. I find my self regularly on the cache according to the phone, looking around, looking at the phone again, and now being 15 feet away. And using it in the woods, ha.

So on to my first true device, looking in the $200 range.

Currently thinking about the GARMIN eTrex Summit HC, Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Color GPS, or Lowrance Endura Out&Back.

Differing feature sets because I am not exactly sure what would be the most useful for geocaching, kayak trips, and backpacking.

Any advice? Thank you!

You must want to start a geek war by asking this question. Everyone here seems to be very partial to whatever they are using.

Personally, I would spend a little more and get a Garmin Oregon. You won't regret it. Since the Garmin Oregon 450 is on the market now, I wouldn't be surprised if you start seeing the Garmin Oregon 300 discounted pretty soon.

If you get an etrex, get an HCx version. I used a Garmin Legend HCx and it worked great until it was stolen.

You should consider the Delorme PN-30 or PN-40 both are around the price range you are looking for. Walmart.com has the 40 for $243 right now and the Camo PN-30 for $187. Topos, Auto Road Routing and Paperless caching right out of the box.

Just came across a refurb p-40 for $199. Thinking about pulling the trigger...
