+doverider Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 (edited) Last year we lost my brother Frankie to Cancer. He was only 44 years old. Losing him deeply affected our entire family. When we looked around, we saw many other families going through the same tragedy and decided to do something about it. We are entering the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Using Frankie's 'handle' - Moxie Man, and his passion for acting, and his military background, we've designed a Geocoin that will be used to raise funds for The American Cancer Society. The coin will be trackable at geocaching.com. THE MONEY WE RAISE will help ensure that the American Cancer Society continues to meet the growing demand for its services - free rides to and from cancer treatments, temporary lodging near treatment centers, help finding clinical trials and affordable insurance, summer camps for children and teens with cancer, and so much more. I'm planning to have the coins available by spring 2010. The coins will go for $10 each. We will also have some limited edition coins that will be auctioned off. I'd like to get an idea of how much interest folks have in purchasing the coin. Please chime in with your thoughts! Thank You! Barbara Edited January 12, 2010 by doverider Quote
+natterjacktoad Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Superb idea and a lovely coin. I lost my sister to cancer in 2006 - she was 39. Anything which raises money to support patients and their families during very dark days get's the thumbs-up from me! I would certainly be interested. Sarah x Quote
+Toojin Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 I like your coin alot. I would be interested in buying one or more after you have had them in hand. Not interested in a pre-sale. Quote

+ChadsClan Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Nice coin. Just thought I'd point out a little typo before you make it. The word "remember" is missing an "m" on your coin. Other than that, it looks good. Quote

+EMSDanel Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I'm a cancer survivor and for the past five years I have been the chair of the Relay For Life in Ellsworth, Maine. By all means, please put me down for two of these coins and let me know how I can purchase them. And thanks to Hollora for bringing these to my attention...... Quote
gillianms Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I am so sorry for your loss. I, too, have lost a close friend to cancer. He was only 49. Raising money for the American Cancer Society is a wonderful cause, of course, but I am also excited about buying some and releasing them to travel and spread awareness. Quote
JohnMac56 Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Sorry for your loss. Having lost a couple of friends to cancer and with my half sister being a survivor I would be interested in a couple of them myself. I really like the idea of using some of the money from the coins' sales to help the ACS, and the coin is a great design. Not trying to be disrespectful or anything as I understand where your idea came from, but what if you were to remove your brothers name and dates from the coin and left it as a blank engravable area so that people who purchase this coin could have them custom engraved with a friend or loved ones name and dates? Either way, you can count on me for at least 2 or 3 of these coins... Quote
+doverider Posted January 12, 2010 Author Posted January 12, 2010 Hi! Thanks for you interest! That engraving idea is wonderful! I really like it and may use it in the future. For this year, our first, we decided to do this in honor of my Brother. He loved to travel so we're sending his spirit round the world with a coin. Sorry for your loss. Having lost a couple of friends to cancer and with my half sister being a survivor I would be interested in a couple of them myself. +doverider Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 I'm really touched by the responses I've gotten so far! As an update, I've sent the finaly design to Direct Mint. So it's in process. I'll post pictures of the samples/ proofs when they are minted. I should all the minted coins within a month or so! Warmly, Barbara Quote
+doverider Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Someone made a keen observation on my original post. To clear up any confusion: My Brother's handle was 'Moxie Man'. Our family is entering the Relay for Life as a team called 'The Moxie Men'. Thanks Dave! Quote
+bnpkidz Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 First and foremost, we are very sorry for your loss. I lost my father in June to colon cancer and my wife lost her mother July '08 to liver cancer. I also like the engraving option! We would probably purchase 3-4 of these. Quote
+Doctor A Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Thanks so much for all the input everyone. I now at least know the status of the coins made. Now just have to think about if I'd like to try to make one, so that a new one could come out... Quote
peachez79 Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 I was just talking to a friend about making some relay coins! I've been involved with the relay for life for years, and would totally purchase a few - please let me know when you're taking orders! Quote

+GeocoinGuy Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Just as a matter of protection, did you happen to get the ACS onboard with this coin... wouldn't want to see you get sued for using their name on the coin. ~J Quote

+The Moop Along Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 And since the thread is back at the top, we received the photo array of the samples last night. And the diework is great. Now to get the coins in hand next week, and choose production enamels/platings. Woot! Quote
