amazar
I think this is a benchmark. It has the letters BM and an identification number on it. Of course, it's not in the US database. It's also located in a very prominent location When I took this shot there were more than 10 other tourists standing around. Quote Link to comment
parkrrrr
Are we guessing? I'm going to guess that with the OS on it, its longitude is zero. Quote Link to comment
GEO*Trailblazer 1
OSBM My guess is Ordnance Survey Bench Mark. www.gps.gov.uk/ www.ordsvy.gov.uk Under Information in the first link then to glossary They are called Active Stations. +amazar
Great! I was wondering what OSBM was. Those look like likely links, as I was in the UK when I got this picture. Any idea what the symbol between the O and the S is? Quote Link to comment
GEO*Trailblazer 1
My Foreign Mapping skills are lacking. Would this not be the Greenwich Meridian. In the 1st link under information then glossary these are called active stations. +amazar
Actually, the arrow pointed straight up. That's why I suspected it was some sort of other symbol. Note that this marker was at the top of a hill. Quote Link to comment
GEO*Trailblazer 1
Up, Azimuth to Polaris, again I am guessing so don't quote me! Down in a plumb line, from Azimuth to the center of the Earth.True Meridian. True Meridian is a line on the ground, this referenced by the plumb line, north and south from the point. East and West would be a True Paralell,of Latitude. +Kewaneh & Shark
Amazar - I would guess the symbol between the O & S to be a surveyor's tripod. Surveyors have been using tripods - and that symbol to identify them - for hundreds of years. Keep on Caching! - Kewaneh Quote Link to comment

amazar
OK, I've got it now. It's a United Kingdom Trig Point. Specifically, it is Arthurs Seat (which it should be, as that is where it is located - all the way at the top). S3012 is its Ordnance Survey number. I thought that the symbol between the O and S might represent a peak - since it does take a nice climb to get to it. Quote Link to comment

amazar
It's a polished metal disk set on top of a concrete base. The base is about a meter tall. The disk is marked with the four points of the compass. I believe you can see the base of the E on the right and the base of the W on the left. The inscription near the center tells you where you are "Height of Arthur's Seat 250.5m" - approximately an 800 foot climb from the base - complete with coordinates "lat 55 56' 43.8" N long 3 9' 38.3W" (Sorry about no degree markers.) Each of the engraved lines out from the center indicates the direction to some other landmark in Scotland. For example, almost directly to the southeast there is "Craigmillar Castle" a distance of 2.4km from Arthur's Seat. It's height is 88m. Around the edge of the disk is a relief indicating what the horizon looks like in each direction and what feature is seen on the horizon in that direction (unfortunately, I believe it's the horizon as seen from the benchmark, not the horizon as seen from this disk). For example, if you look of to the northeast, you can see at the horizon the "Mouth of the Forth" I thought it was really cool. Definitely worth taking some time to look at if you are ever at Arthur's Seat. Quote Link to comment

SixDogTeam
You guys are all way off base (no pun intended). The symbol that looks like the three legs of a tripod, is actually the corporate logo for MTD lawn mowers. It's stamped into the metal deck of every one (Murray Tractor Division). Probably shows the way to the shed where the mowers are kept... woo-woo-wuf!! Quote Link to comment
