suewes
I'm sure this is a dumb question - but I just bought one of these and have a question about this - I can 'hand' enter coordinates...but can I download coordiantes into it? I'm wondering if i use the software that came with it - save the waypoints and then download the region to the handheld....is that what i'm suppose to be doing? Do most ppl have to enter coordinates by hand? or can they be downloaded? (IE if i had a different GPS). I really appreciate any help here - thanks/ Edited April 29, 2010 by suewes Quote Link to comment
+leatherman
You have to convert the GPX files from GC.com to the format that the Meridian supports. Then it's as easy as copying and pasting to your SD card. I use GSAK, Google it, to convert mine. Mapsend has a different format too, but GSAK will do both. Quote Link to comment

Do you (can you?) copy and paste the converted files to the SD card by taking the card out of the Meridian and putting it in a card reader to do the pasting (if you don't have the cable to connect the Meridian to your computer)??? Yes. I never connect my Meridian to my computer. I have only used the serial cable twice, for firmware updates. Quote Link to comment

Thank you, i'm currently "exploring" GSAK and will give pasting to my SD card a try when I'm comfortable with the sort function. Stan Quote Link to comment
+Knight2000
You don't need to sort with GSAK. Just load the ZIP/GPX file. Then click FILE > EXPORT > Magellan eXplorist and SD card. Make sure at the top the format is Magellan Protocol (SD CARD). Then just paste that file on your SD card. GSAK is great for sorting, but it is also great for loading info into a myriad of GPSr units. Note that the Meridian will only hold 500 waypoints per file. Quote Link to comment
+BAMBOOZLE
GSAK is the way to go.......we have used Platinum units since 2003 and after many field trials with other units I think its the best geocaching unit ever ( no unit I've seen has an electronic compass that comes close to the Platinum ) I proceded to collect every Meridian ever made including 8 Platinums and 3 Colors. Imagine my shock when a cacher pulled out a purple one the other day....turned out it was a Thales Mapping Unit in a Meridian case with a Meridian Color screen.......at $1500 used I'm glad its not a real Meridian. I've converted dozens of folks both locally and around the country to Platinums....they will send them to me and I put firmware, etc on them and mail them back. On long trips I store over 50 PQ's on a 2G card so no computer is ever needed.....try that with a new unit. Hey leatherman, I love that avator Quote Link to comment
