Dakota 20 or explorist gc

I'm looking for pros and cons to the Garmin Dakota 20 and the Magellan eXplorist GC. My husband is going to get me a new unit for my birthday and I need help?

That is my only pro/con. I know nothing of that magellan unit. My dakota hasn't failed me yet

I think the Dakota is a bit brighter, though I tested them at different times and not side-by-side. The Dakota has the ability to add Garmin custom maps (e.g., USGS topos, PDF maps, etc.) and BirdsEye aerial imagery. You could also add City Navigator maps and use it in your car.

 

The Magellan comes with a great world-wide road map that basically has every road in NAVTEQ's database, but cannot be used for highway routing. Nor is it very good for anything other than geocaching. If you want a hiking unit, get the Dakota.

 

The Dakota currently has a $50 rebate, but it's not valid at Amazon.
