Used PN-20

Picked up a used PN-20 last night and trying to decide if it stays or goes. I have no cable, no software, no manual.

I have no problem with $20 for a cable and I can download a manual, but software looks like it's an issue. I see they sell a caching app for $10. Will that be enough for me to get out and hunt or am I looking at dropping money for X-Maps or some such?

I'm looking to use it as a backup unit so I'm not planning on making a major investment.

You won't need X-Maps, but you may want Topo USA. I don't think its required though, but hopefully some current DeLorme users will chime in.

I presume that the previous owner has it loaded with the maps of his specific area of interest.

If you have need to use it outside of that area, I agree with the note above that you will need some version of DeLorme's Topo USA software and mapping application CD and data CD.

As far as the maps go, I'm not overly concerned about them at this point. My main concern right now is what do I 'need' to use this thing for caching. I want to load my PQs and go caching. If I'm going to have to make a major investment, I'll return the unit.

If you don't care about maps, all you need is a cable (12.95 from Delorme) and either Cache Register (9.95 download from Delorme) or GSAK (free to try but will get nag screens after 25 days unless you buy it for $25) Either of those programs will allow you to load pocket queries to the PN-20 as long as you update it with the latest firmware from Delorme. If you don't care about pocket queries, you can skip the software and just load caches one at a time using the "send to GPS" button on each cache page.

All you need is the cable and you can use gpsbable v3.1.7 (free-donation recommended) to save/load waypoints/geocaches, tracks, routes. Add to that (if wanted) the DeLorme Send to GPS plugin and you're set
