To activate or not

My son had collected some geocoins about 1 year ago some of the folks here were nice enough to donate a couple of coins to get him starte noe he has lost interest in his coins, but I have gained an interest in coins.

 

My question is do you activate the coins in your collection or do you leave them unactivated. They will be in my collection not out roaming the world. I have one USA coin I would like to activate to send out in the world. but it is the others I was wondering about.

I personally activate all the coins I keep so if I show them off at an event and one comes up missing, there is that tiny possibility it will get dropped into a cache and I can then retrieve it. If you do not intend to share your coins in person at events then I would suggest not activating them so at a later date if you want to sell them, you can get a better price.

yes, i agree. i only activate my "keepers" or geocoins i plan on keeping forever! wow...thats a long time! i also activate a few that i "set free" into a geocache. although, due to geocoin theft, i am more likely to just place an unactivated geocoin in a cache as a "gift" for the first person that finds it. this makes the gift receiver happy, i do not grow too attached to it as a traveler coin, and the gift receiver will perhaps either start collecting geocoins, or will "set it free" themselves. its easier for someone to release a geocoin they were given, since there is no cost involved to them. i believe it also deters "theft" of geocoins since you can't "steal" what is already given to you...lol...some people say i'm a dreamer..but i'm not the only one...

Thanks for the replies I believe I will activate the ones I am keeping for my collection., I also have one I would like to set free taht I will be activating now I just have to figure out how to activate them. What should I do once I activate them won't they all show up on my trackables list I would say that list would start to get pretty cluttered is there another way to do this.

Create an unpublished cache and store them in it. There is a thread around here someplace describing what to do.

Just put them in "unknown location" and it won't show up in your inventory.
