Hi: I was looking for a benchmark Dated 1935 on the steps of a local high school. The steps and surrounding area look like they were replaced recently. Was someone suppose to put back the bench mark ?? or maybe it was out dated and of no use any more. This was very disappointing, It would have been my first BM find.

Nope, it is most likely just gone... or buried under the new steps. icon_smile.gif I kinda wondered if the NGS ever replaces markers that get destroyed - but I think they just mark them off the official list. I wonder what motivates them to place a new marker somewhere... I mean - why at that location, and why at that time. I should go to their site and read up on that instead of babbling here I suppose. icon_razz.gif

The ones that I find here 1923 are usually on the original Locations of the First residents, and the ones that families still own those places, the ones that have changed owners are often not found. Most of the found have references to the Patents of the 1900's, The Reclamation act,Started by President McKinnley and further worked on by Theodore Roosevelt and President Taft,I have the monuments in my front yard that shows this. From the 1906 17" by 6' by 3" stone reference in the Original survey,by the County Surveyor , 1933 Survey with reference,1961 U.S.Coast and Geodetic Survey mark and the 1974 BLM National Vertical Datum Triangulation Station, and the current work 1995-2002 GPS.Many have been removed because the (LAND) description does not match the current "Adverse Possesion",and by study you will find this to be true in many areas of the Country. These marks are all a part of the System, beginning with Thomas Jefferson, founder of the U.S.Coast and Geodetic Survey, called the PLSS or the Public Land Survey System.Started in the 13 Original colonies then refined across the Nation with the Louisiana Purchase.
