Mine will be here hopefully by the end of the week! Can't wait!

Well mine is here and I already feel lost. It is quite a bit different then my nuvi in my truck. I have been outside trying to get it to acquire a signal and no luck it is overcast I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. And the manual is very vague.

it seemed like 10 or 15 minutes the first time out, for my 450 to acquire all the sat's and such. good thing I had a Blue Moon to sip.

That's the problem I was missing the Blue Moon.

Once I get a micro sd card ( i got a regular sd card) then I go to map source and install the topo map I got from gpsfiledepot.com to my 450?

Actually you can put the topos right onto the unit. You've got plenty of room there (850 MB). You can always move the map file to the microSD card when you get it.

I really like the City Navigator NT program (DVD version, not microSD card) for street maps, but its another $80. The free 1:24k topos from GPSFileDepot are great, and the new BirdsEye imagery ($30/year for all you can download) is really amazing.

The unit does a lot for you, but you'll need to play with it to find the settings you like best.

Negative. gpsfiledepot is free. It's the Garmin "Birdseye" that runs $30/yr.

do you buy that directly on the garmin website? I did not see that last night on their website.

I got the 8 GB. It works well. It just doesn't seem that the Garmin can make use of all the memory.

Actually, the Oregon/Colorado/Dakotas can use the larger memory. Individual map files cannot be larger than 4 GB, as this is a limit imposed by the FAT32 file system. However, you can have multiple map files. I have around 12 GB of maps on my Colorado's SD card at the moment and it all works fine.

It's the actual map tile number that can creep up on you. Some maps consist of a truly outrageous number of tiles and the oregon series is limited to a number between 2500 and 5000 tiles cumulative. (Tiles are the little partitions in mapsource). It doesn't seem to matter if the map is disabled or not .If the max is exceeded, map areas show up blank. A workaround is to create a folder outside of the garmin folder and "park" all the monster maps in there. You can then cut and paste them into and out of the garmin folder without waiting as they upload them from your PC every time you exchange desired maps. Not as spiffy as having them all at your disposal but relatively quick

ok I have downloaded the following

mapsource

new mexico topo (where do I find this on my garmin?)

basecamp

What else do I need to do for this fabulous creature?

Where is the best place to learn how to use all these map features?

To install the topos, follow the instructions on the download page. Linky

BaseCamp will allow you to download the BirdsEye imagery and install it. Check the tools tab at the top.

First thing I would do is backup your Oregon 450 onto your computer. That way if you delete something by mistake you can load it back to your GPS.

How do I do this?

I was checking out the profiles section on the 450 and when I would go back a screen the fitness, automotive and marine disappeared has this happen to anyone else?

Connect it to your computer, and copy the entire Oregon drive over. It will take awhile, but its well worth doing.

How do I do this?

On your Oregon, Go to 'Setup' then 'System' then at the bottom select Interface 'Garmin Spanner'

Plug your Oregon into the USB cable and connect to the computer. When asked if you would like to go to Mass Storage, select 'Yes'

Go to 'My Computer' and find your Oregon...it should be under 'devices with removable storage'

There is a folder called 'Garmin' this contains your basemaps and all your Oregon system info. Just copy the whole folder and paste it on your desktop or somewhere you can find it.

You now have a backup of all of your Oregon system files and basemaps.

What is the difference, besides price, between the gpsfiledepot 24k maps and the ones you can buy from Garmin?

The Garmin maps are are routable, but since they don't have many trails, it's not a big deal IMHO.

Some Garmin maps also have digital elevation model (DEM) data so you can see things in 3D if your gps will work that way, like the Oregon, Colorado and Dakota series.

why does all of this make feel so dumb? where can I find the topo map i downloaded to my gps?

Go to 'Setup' then 'Map' then 'Map Information Select Map' then choose the map you just downloaded and 'Enable' and there you go!

when I select geocacheing on the 450 and select find geocache I get a message that says try adjusting search parameters I get the same message when I select various items in the where to menu. What do I need to do? I did download a cache that I had already found and we went out to find it again. Do the map while we were in town on on the 450 not give you street names

I connected gps to computer, opened up my computer found the garmin i had to open it then i selected the garmin folder and copied it to a place on my computer but it only took a couple seconds. so i do not feel like i backed it up properly.

are there street maps for the 450 that i need to purchase?
If you plan to use your 450 for street navigation, you could go with the Garmin street maps - but you could also work from these: Worldwide routable Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap

I feel like all I have done for 2 days is downloading stuff for the 450. I thought it would come I waould download some geocaches and be out having fun by now. Instead i fell overwhelmed maybe this is too much gps for our first handheld unit.

You don't have to download any of this stuff to go out caching. A lot of folks just use the VERY basic basemap. Some throw some topos on it. If you already have a decent automotive nav unit, you really don't need to add the street maps - use the automotive unit you've got to get you in the ballpark, then pull out your new Oregon go get down to the nitty gritty.

then would i have to download caches to both units?

There's a significant learning curve for just about any handheld GPS for the first time user. You could start with one without maps, but the only way I know of to get much simpler is to go with the geomate.jr, or maybe the just released eXplorist GC.

I have this one now! so i will learn how to use it! it may just take awhile.

Yeah, but that's usually a piece of cake if you've got the right automotive unit. When I'm prepping up caches to send to my Dakota 20, I just tell GSAK to "Export" another copy of the results as an OV2 file that my TomTom likes, and copy it into the map folder on my TomTom. Done.

Having the same selection of caches on your automotive unit as a "point of interest file" makes it super easy to navigate to the general area of the cache, especially if your automotive unit does spoken directions and all that good stuff. I also use the TomTom to create caching itineraries from a series of caches and let the unit do all of the road navigation. I find it easier to see (and hear) the bigger screen.

Then again - like I say - you can start out by just copying the Pocket Query *.gpx file into your Oregon's Garmin/GPX directory and having at it! That's all it takes to get started if you have some idea of where you're going.

I do more outdoor exploring, mountain biking, hiking, etc., than geocaching, but when I am caching, I generally know what park/area I'm heading for. I never load caches in my nuvi. I just drive/walk/bike to the area and then turn on my handheld. Hard core cachers will have different needs though.

Once you get the caches and a decent map loaded into your 450 (I use a 400T with the included map and one extra free one), you'll be good to go without all of the extra stuff like Basecamp, etc. The cache descriptions that I get from pocket queries have the latitude / longitude information in them. I just type the lat / long into my Nuvi to get close to the cache (I don't usually go find caches that are buried miles into the woods), and I park when I get there. I then use the 400T to find the cache once I'm out of the car.

I then use the 400T to find the next nearest cache and repeat the process once I'm back in the car.

Good luck and have fun!

You are correct. When you downloaded them they were already marked 'found' Try calling up a cache page then, with the Oregon plugged in, click the 'Send to GPS' option. (if you need the latest Garmin Communicator plugin it should prompt you) This will send that whole cache page to the unit. If you want a bunch, get a pocket query, then open it so it is unzipped, then drag the GPX file into your Garmin/GPX folder on the Oregon.

You can have up to 200 files containing up to 5000 caches (total) on the 450/550 or up to 2000 caches on the 300/400

OK, then it sounds like everything is working correctly. If you want to navigate to an already found cache, select 'Geocaches', then 'Show Found' then select the cache you want to find again, then 'Go' at the bottom of the page. Now the unit is navigating. Press the 'X' to get to the main menu, then 'Map' or 'Compass' to get going.

When you want to see the descriptions, just press the 'X' to get to the main menu then the 'Geocache' button and you'll be able to choose from 'Show description' 'Show logs' 'Show Hint' etc...

There are a few cool setup shortcuts which depend on your personal tastes. I have different 'Profiles' for Automotive vs Geocaching mode. I like the 'Dashboard' for caching on foot but I use 4 data fields while driving. These settings are found under Settings/Map/Data Fields.

The important thing is to try things and ask lots of questions...it seems like a lot at first, but the interface is pretty easy to use and you'll be an expert in no time!

Hey quick question about the maps at gpsfiledepot..i downloaded one of the topo maps for texas, and will load it on my oregon 450 when it arrives on wednesday. Will I be able to use the 3D topo feature with these topo maps from gpsfiledepot?

I don't think so. I doubt that they have the Digital Elevation Model data in them.

I downloaded the Arizona Topo, and it didn't have the 3D.

did you ever get your 3D topo for the 450

Usually it's just a few minutes, occasionally the server gets bogged down and it takes a few hours.

You'll only get the DEM shading on Garmin Maps. Kinda neat, but not really very useful. Having 20' contour lines (1:24k topos) is way better.

it looks like I am going to have to go thru all 25 pages of cache list and go to the bottom and check the (check all box) I thought if I selected check all it would check all 500 caches. Am I missing something for an easier way to download to gps?
