+Veda
I'm back with the newbie questions again. I visited a benchmark where the description said there would be an "Unstamped Disk." What I found at the location was a disk that said "Massachusetts Triangulation Station" but no other markings. It seems other triangulation disks I've seen photos of have a year and other data on them. So does unstamped mean it just wasn't stamped with the other data or does it mean a completely blank disk? +Black Dog Trackers
I assume that what you found is the disk described. I'm imagining that the Massachusetts agency that set the disk bought a large number of them already stamped "Massachusetts Triangulation Station". When they set each one, they would stamp on the Designation - except this one, for some reason. You might check 'nearest benchmarks' to find ones with designation names in the same series and read their descriptions and maybe even locate one or two. You'll probably see that others are correctly stamped with their designation. As usual for such questions, we like to see a reference in your post to the PID you're asking about. +beejay&esskay
I have a related "unstamped disk" question so let me piggyback on this thread. While searching for JZ1409 I found an unstamped disk. It's on a "round concrete monument". The disk is labeled: US Coast & Geodetic Survey and State Survey Station with no number or elevation entered. It's at N39 54.854 W84 37.568 (15 ft accuracy). It is well-tended in the lawn of the house, but not at the southwest corner of the property (as JZ1409 is described.) At the southwest corner there is a concrete post that may have been the location of JZ1409, but isn't well enough preserved to even say it was a "standard" NGS "round concrete monument". (At N39 54.824 W84 37.564, 20 ft accuracy) Any idea what is going on here? Quote Link to comment
+user13371
I've found one of those also, NE0426. No doubt about this being the one on the data sheet though, the witness post & sign give it away. I just assumed that when it was placed, someone was lazy or didn't have time --- LDR. Quote Link to comment
Z15
One thing about those state survey marks (Michigan Geodetic Survey) is that they were WPA projects during the depression. They never got to finish the job maily in the LP as the federal funds lapsed at the end of the fiscal year and were not reapproved by Congress. We had a complete list of all the MIGS marks in Michigan at work and I read the whole report on thier activities (don't have access to the info anymore, retired). This mark in question was later leveled acrross by USC&GS and they did not stamp a designation I suppose because records allready showed no stampings. The work was done by out of work engineers under the supervion of a Prefessor at some college in the LP (MSU?). Quote Link to comment
+wolf452
Very interesting. My PC found one last week and we haven't been able to get any info on it. I think I'll try the State Library. Quote Link to comment
