I've never had one made so don't know much about the costs, but these companies both make bespoke coins.... Guess the cost depends on the numbers you have made up....

Landsharkz

I don't know whether you've found it yet but Groundspeak have a separate forum for all things relating to geocoins and there's useful information pinned at the top of it:

Geocoins Discussion forum.

It's costly to have a geocaching.com trackable geocoin produced to your own design. The last time I heard details from someone in the UK who had done it the total bill came out at around £1000. There are 3 or 4 UK geocachers who have done/are still designing and creating geocoins and they may well post here later to give you further information.

A few coins I bought (other peoples' designs) cost me £4-6 each. If you buy 100 for £270 and then sell 90 for £4 the price for the remaining ten that you keep work out at a very reasonable £-9 each.

I've "done" two coins for Cornwall. The problem is you have to pay for artwork and dies no matter how many coins you have made, so whilst I'm sure someone will quote for an order of 25 coins - it won't be very economic. Check, but I think if you want your coin to be trackable with its own icon you need to place a minimum order of 100.

From experience, the best UK made price I could find was about £30 a coin, plus the Groundspeak Tracking and icon charge, so the coins would have sold at the £35 mark. By buying from China, via a Canadian company! we sold coins at £5 a throw.

One possible option - if enough UK cachers were interested, is to design a generic coin, that could be personalised to a degree.

If anyone's interested in that option then give me a shout through my profile (with an idea of how many you'd want) and I'll do some sums as to a probable cost.

*mouse* has linked to the two companies that seem to make a lot of coins for UK based cachers. My experience with Landsharkz is very very good and I know others are very pleased with Oakcoins. There are other companies though.

I'm really impressed with Oakcoins, Landsharks and other geocoins I've seen from USA and Europe (made in China) they're beautiful. I just like to buy local for environmental reasons, and support local manufacture and jobs where possible. Hadn't realised how expensive it would be though! Will have to think about it, but can't consider spending £35 per coin. For that price it would have to double up as something useful and beautiful! (Make the tea, not just look like a teapot!)

i have recently found a UK supplier Premier Badges

i have been dealing with them for my Jungle Grins Series and also my Personal coin.

The are located just of the M25 near brentwood

Die fees are [edited]

100 coins in Antique Bronze, silver or Gold any varients (my personal was 75 bronze, 20 silver and 5 gold) with 5 enamle colours [edited]

the only thing is that as they are not an approved seller with Groundspeak so you have to order the codes from GC directly and then have them engraved on after [edited]

they offer collect in person (50 miles for me but i then get to see the die's and take a few photo's of the mint) or P&P [edited]

after all the companies i have asked these are the cheapest and in the UK so save on delivery

Even if if you buy from a local producer, the odds are that the raw material wouldn't be. Sadly not the world we live in anymore......

Last time I made some, I used Coins and Pins, but I'm not sure that they're still producing geocoins. Oakcoins seem to have a good reputation. Generally, the coin project is managed in the US but the final coin production is in China. I doubt that it would be worth making less than 100; I've produced over 1000.

If the total cost of the coin is above £3 (including postage, die work, art work and so on) it's unlikely to be viable unless the design is really exceptional, or there's some special reason for people to want to buy. Check here for some ideas.

Yes, the metals themselves are not going to be from here, and I'm not against a global economy on the grand scale, just at the small scale of which apples I buy or how many times something has flown around the world unnecessarily before I use it. I wouldn't chooses local at the expense of quality, either, I just like there to be a choice, and if we never consider our local/UK companies, that choice dies out.

Maybe I should be looking for, say Australian coins made with metal from Australian ore, to save on the air miles back and forth.

Please see the pinned thread, in the geocoin forums, for the Groundspeak Approved Vendor list. Those vendors can tell you how much your coin will cost to produce, one you give them all the factors. Metal, finish, enamel, colors, size, shape, etc....

I'm in the process of setting up a system to produce one off coins, using a small CNC mill rather than a press. It's still very early days yet in terms of what I will be able to achieve, what materials I will be able to use, etc. - it will still be some considerable time before I can produce my first one.

Also I'm setting it up for my own use - it will be incredibly labour intensive, so totally impractical as a commercial operation. Nevertheless, in certain special circumstances I might be prepared to manufacture coins for others if I could be convinced the reasons were very special :) . Always assuming I can get it to produce coins of what I consider to be an acceptable quality, of course.

Rgds, Andy

And now, as with all threads of this nature, that make it too tempting to advertise in, I am closing this thread and referring you to the pinned threads at the top of this forums, for the Groundspeak Approved Vendor List.
