Signature items

I have run accross a couple caches with sig items in them & wanted to know what's the protocol on sig items? I have seen some simple ones where someone has taken a swag item & wrote their geo name on it & others such as patches or such they have had made. Also business type cards with their geo name & sometimes some stats... so are any sig items ok to take? Should I have a sig item to leave if I take a sig item? Just curious... :)

Yes, it's fine to take signature items (unless there's a specific note in the cache to leave something there - we did come across a cache once where the rubber duckie inside was actually part of the cache!)

You don't have to leave a sig item of your own, although it's courteous to leave some piece of swag if you remove something from the cache.

A lot of us collect sig items; it's fun to come across one from a name you've seen in other logs!

Just wanted to add a question to this thread....

When placing a signature item, is it a requirement to have the date of the placing of the item marked on the item or would it be better to sign the log as well as place the signature item ?

I myself have made some business cards but haven't included any dates, but, if need be, I can add a date specific to the day I am caching using a cd marker pen, or, should I just write in the log book as well as place the item ?

Signature items are trade items, not substitutes for signing the log. So go ahead and write the date (or the GCxxxxx number, as I do) on your sig item, but also sign the log.

Some people find that business cards cause problems in caches. They tend to fall out when other people open the cache, and they can easily get wet and mouldy. There's a good chance a business card will get lost or CITO-ed out, and if you haven't signed the log, there will be no physical trace of your visit. Instead of cards, consider printing up stickers that you can place in the logbook.

Signature items of any sort should not be used to replace your note in the logbook. Always sign the log!

Should I go back to the cache locations where I just placed the sig item or leave it as it is and just make sure in future to sign the log ?

1). I don't ask people to trade even for my sig items. I want them to have them to add to their collections. Some folks believe STRICTLY that you take something out, you put something in.

2). Depending on how many caches you have left your sig card in without signing the log would be the better judgement of whether or not you should go back and sign the logs. I don't know of very many cache owners who actually check the logs with what's posted online....very, very few. So, at worst, you could lose a few smilies. How bad do you want them?

Let your conscience be your guide.

For what it's worth, people are free to take ONE of my sig items without trading for it. I would rather they trade but it's not going to harsh my mellow if they don't as long as they don't already have one of my sig items.

If I take anything out of a cache, I put something in. If a cache can hold swag and I have some with me, I will leave some swag whether or not I take anything.

If a cache can hold my sig item, and I have one with me, I put it in it.

Well, the caches that I placed my sig item in are not high traffic locations anyways, so, I shall leave it as it is and just take the advice given and sign the log in future.

That's up to you and the Ccahe Owner. Maybe you can make a fun adventire of going back, like to drop a trackable or something

Most of my sigitems are parts of games that I've made up, so it's intended for people to take them. I leave several in each Cache(between 3 and 12) so that more players will have chances in the games. It's expected that each player will end up with many copies of my Gamepieces, and even required for some games. What would/does bother me is if ONE person takes all the cards from one Cache, that's not the way I intended them, but I'm not going to call anyone out over it(Unless maybe they start cleaning out every Cache).
