Syncing GSAK and PN-40

I was wondering if there is a way to sync the PN-40 and GSAK to get the most up to date info on the caches, or if you have to delete, then resend the GPX files to the GPS.

Thanks!

I use GSAK all of the time. At the top of the page there is a drop down menu called GPS. Choose Setup, choose Delorme, then choose PN-40 (or whatever you have). Now under that same menu choose Send Waypoints, choose your settings and send. That simple.

Some of the options I've chosen. I click on change symbols and then combine both. Now I can go through and choose the icons I want displayed on the screen such as the Geocache Found icon for caches I've found. I include child waypoints and set it to include 10 past logs. I also only send 990 caches, that way if a new cache is published I can use the Send to GPS feature and have room for it.

With the 2.7 firmware you can also save that file to your SD card and send another 1000 caches to the unit from GSAK and keep repeating until you have filled the card up.

Or, would I be better served getting Cache Register?

They are not mutually exclusive; more like complementary.

Cache Register is easier to get started with.

Then if you want more functionality in cache management than CR provides,

you might give GSAK a try.

People like it because it's like a point & shoot camera. Everything is simple and automatic. It grabs your PQs from the website for you. You plug in your 40, bring up CR, pick a PQ from the available list, press sync and you're good to go. After getting home from caching, plug in the 40, bring up CR and it will grab your field notes and upload them to the website and then clean them off the 40.

I've been debating getting CR, but can't really find anything using the search that clearly defines WHY people like it or don't like it.

It's very easy to use right out of the box (well, after the download).

Well, there has been one exception to that:

Outside of that one person, there is no telling how many others had no substantial issues in getting it to work, dozens or hundreds, I suppose.

For the OP:

I recommend GSAK over CR simply for the control to filter out caches that I will never hunt for. i.e. I don't do paddleing caches, which clears out 100 caches from my database of 1500. I also continue to filter puzzles that I haven't solved (I change the icon to traditional for the puzzles I have solved) and then filter down to a distance of 20 miles from my house, for a total of 900 plus caches. Very powerful tool!!

I include child waypoints and set it to include 10 past logs. I also only send 990 caches, that way if a new cache is published I can use the Send to GPS feature and have room for it.

Jeff,

How do you set up GSAK to include 10 past logs? I would like to try it and maybe I can get something more than the "TFTC" logs while on the trails.

Thanks,

Ski

I use the Send Waypoints feature under the GPS drop down menu. Before you hit send uncheck use defaults and one of the settings is the logs to send. I also clicked on the change symbols button, choose combine both, and then setup what icon I wanted for what type so it matches the Geocaching Google maps.

Feel free to email me if you need other help, I sometimes can respond quicker to that.

Pocket queries only contain the last 5 logs, a limitation set by Groundspeak. If you pull the cache individually from the website using the "GPX Exchange File" button, you will get up to the last 20 logs. Filtering that GPX through GSAK as Jeff described will get you as many of those 20 logs as you want.

I just ran a test to verify you are correct about the 5 log limit on logs in PQs. I have more logs in mine because I have been updating the same database for the past two years, so I have more than ten logs for older caches.

As far as I know, there is no need to set a browser type for cache register, it doesn't care. You will, however, want to follow these steps on the website before using CR the first time.

1- go to GC.com and click on YOUR PROFILE

2- then click on Your Account Details

3- scroll to the bottom of that page to Your Preferences

4- if it is set to 1.0.1, skip to step 10

5- click on change

6- find GPX Version Preference and change it to 1.0.1

7- click on Save Changes

8- click on change again

9- if the GPX Version Preference setting now says 1.0, go back to step 6 (yes really)

10- find GPX Version Preference and change it to 1.0

11- click on Save Changes

12- re-run the PQs that have the version problem, the new PQs should be OK

How are you loading the field notes? I go into my field notes on Geocaching.com with my preferred browser and upload it through there.

In Firefox click on tools and select options. At the top of the box choose Advanced, then choose the General tab. Click the box for Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser and the click on check now. Tell it to be the default. Now start up IE. When a box pops up saying it isn't the default uncheck the box that says to check to see if IE is the default the click No.

Yep, what Jeff said. Be aware though that if you're using Firefox version 3.6, the Delorme "Send To GPS" pluggin isn't working right now. For that, you'll need to stick to an earlier version of Firefox or go with IE. Delorme is aware of it and it's on there to-do list. AFAIK, it doesn't cause problems with CR.

I'm trying to figure out a problem with GSAK symbols on my PN30. This isn't the exact question asked by the original poster but I'm hoping for some guidance.

If I use CR to send the caches to the PN30, it will show the correct cache symbols (multi, unknown, etc). If I use GSAK, they all show traditional. My method of transferring was loading the file into GSAK v7.6.2.45 and then using the Delorme GPS Export macro v1.0.3.

I've tried using the GPS Send Waypoints but it just gives me a very lengthy error message. I know this can't be that hard. That has got to be a very simple step by step way to handle this.

Guidance would be appreciated!

That macro was written for an earlier version of GSAK before there was direct support for the PN. It may not work anymore which would explain your problem. Can you give us the error message? I assume you have chosen your PN-30 in the setup option from the GPS tab. Also, when you bring up the "send waypoints" box, click on change symbols and make sure "cache type only" is selected and not "status only".

Yes I have the PN30 selected. I chose the Cache Type Only selection. I'm unsure how to attach a screenshot of the error message but won't let me select any of the text to put in this message. Its very lengthy. It starts out with Error sending Waypoints...GPS Babel V1.3.7-beta 20091003... Then there is a ton of other codes.

Perhaps reinstalling GSAK or even updating to the latest beta version. I'm running it and it works fine (7.7.0.86).

Oh so close and yet just not there yet. I installed 7.7.0.86. If I uncheck the debug mode, it will send the caches to the unit HOWEVER.... The symbols are correct but the cache name now appears to be the HINTS. If I leave the debug mode checked, it give me the huge error message and will not load the caches at all.
