+Juan Durrer Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Hi Guys, I'm a new Premium member and frustrated as hell! I'm used to reading FAQs and searching the forums before posting all kinds of newb q's, but... In general, I can't find squat on the site, and the limitations on short words neuters almost every search I try to make... I've got more DNFs here than in the real world. Specifically, at the moment, I can't find out how to create an Ignore List and/or what it will and won't do and/or how to incorporate it into my geocaching experience. Additionally, I'd love to know more about Pocket Queries and what the most popular types are, and why someone would need more than 5 per day? They must do something really, really amazing that I haven't yet recognized. Will they grow hair or brighten my teeth? Thanks for specific answers, and for pointers to web site locations for more info, or to great old threads that I haven't found yet! Rob
+Gushoneybun Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 To ignore a cache click on the ignore button top right of the caches page. These ignored caches are not displayed anywhere so no one can tell what you are ignoring, you can add comments in if you wish. The list of ignored caches appears within the bookmark tab, (sorry can not post shortcut as GC.com seems to be down at the moment.) At any time you can come back to the ignore listing and delete the cache from the list and you will then see it again. If you are running PQ's click on the not on my ignore list tab as well, otherwise you will get the cache in the PQ. I will let someone else answer the other questions.
+tozainamboku Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Here's a link to Marwell's tutorial on Pocket Queries. The people who are asking for more than 5 per day are generally maintaining an offline copy of a portion of the Geocaching.com database to use for planning Geocaching trips and such. They use third party tools like GSAK that allow you to filter caches using much more sophisticated queries than are available in the pocket query themselves an to manipulate the GPX files in various ways to provide a better paperless geocaching experience. Some feel that having a large offline database is necessary as geoaching.com may not be always be online or may be responding slowly during period of heavy demand. Such offline database are allowed for personal use only. Other uses (sharing data, putting up websites with data derived from this (other than your personal geocaching statistics, etc.) without written permission from Groundspeak is a violation of the waypoint license argreement.
+Harry Dolphin Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Additionally, I'd love to know more about Pocket Queries and what the most popular types are, and why someone would need more than 5 per day? They must do something really, really amazing that I haven't yet recognized. Will they grow hair or brighten my teeth? Why? Because I can? Because Geocaching allows me to? Once a week , I load up my Gupy with all the caches within 65 miles (parts of Pennsylvania, and New York), and every cache in New Jersey. That allows me to go anywhere without planning. Gupy knows all. Today, I decided to go to Milford, Pa. Tomorrow, I'll probably be in New York City. All of the caches (that are active) are loaded. I'm ready to go anywhere nearby! Unfortunately, with the 4 to 12" of snow on the ground, I was not very successful geocaching. Oh, well. Hopefully, Sunday, we'll be in the city again. But, if we decide to go to Watchung Reservation, or Spring Valley, or Long Island, everything is loaded in Gupy! We're all set! Only five a day does not give me Philadelphia, or Hartford. Oh, well. Need to plan if I'm going more than 65 miles. It also keeps your nails shiny, and some say it is better than (unnamed medication).
+Juan Durrer Posted March 6, 2010 Author Posted March 6, 2010 (edited) Thanks guys! I'd tried creating my own lists called "Ignore." Never even saw the "Ignore" link on the cache page! And thanks for the PQ info. Rob Edited March 6, 2010 by Juan_Durrer
+Tequila Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 One additional point. You can run a PQ based on your Ignore List if you want to keep them in GSAK or another program. And the nice part is that the PQ gives all of your ignored caches even if it exceeds the 500 cache limit for most PQ's.
+Isonzo Karst Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Geocaching.com lacks a site map, or help. What it does have is the Knowledge Books. On the left nav bar, find Resources, and on that Resources page, find Knowledge Books. They're searchable (sorta) and you can see the table of contents. an awful lot of common questions are answered there. http://support.Groundspeak.com/
GOF and Bacall Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 One additional point. You can run a PQ based on your Ignore List if you want to keep them in GSAK or another program. And the nice part is that the PQ gives all of your ignored caches even if it exceeds the 500 cache limit for most PQ's. It will not work if you have over 1000 caches on the list. It says that the PQ has generated but the email never shows up. It looks like it is time that I start keeping an off line database. It isn't something I really want to do but if the tools on the site aren't going to work I don't have much of a choice.

PQ's not showing up. I wonder if that is related.

That was back when I first noticed that Jeremy owned my ignore list.
