Is there a difference between Station and Station BM?

Re TR1680.

The official history for 1941 mentions a station, and says that no RMs were established.

The official history for 1962 mentions that same station, plus a different station benchmark.

Can someone enlighten me what is what, here? Thanks!

What you've found is a symantics issue. In the surveying community, the term 'station' basically means survey mark. A station can be a triangulation (horizontal) station, an elevation (vertical) station, or one of many other types. The term 'benchmark' is used exclusively for elevation stations. To quote from the Benchmark FAQs: 'In the surveying profession, the term benchmark is applied only to the vertical control type, but for sake of discussion on the Geocaching website, both vertical and horizontal control points are commonly referred to as benchmarks.'

Station TR1680 was monumented as a third order (low accuracy) triangulation station with no reference monuments as described in 1941. It was not intended to have an elevation affixed to it and is therefore, not a true benchmark. It looks like that sometime between 1941 and 1962 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers set an elevation station - a true benchmark - nearby, and it was described in the 1962 history, probably to make the next surveyors aware that there was a nearby vertical control mark.

Keep on Caching! (and Benchmarking!)
