Placing a cache on vacation?

Here's what the guidelines say about placing caches on vacations

It may be difficult to fulfill your maintenance obligations if you place a cache while traveling on vacation or otherwise outside of your normal caching area. These caches may not be published unless you are able to demonstrate an acceptable maintenance plan. It is not uncommon for caches to go missing, areas to be cleared, trails to be blocked or closed, objects used for multi-cache or puzzles to be moved or removed, etc. Your maintenance plan must allow for a quick response to reported problems.

If you cannot maintain the cache or make arrangements for some to maintain it for you, don't place one.

It's best to have fun finding caches when on vacation and let the locals place them. They are aware of things like local geocaching regulations that you may not be.

I also agree with Starbrand. Read the guidlines thoroughly before placing ANY cache. The few minutes it takes can save you loads of extra work later on.

Although said in previous posts, I'll say it a little differently.

Placing a cache is not a drop it and forget it adventure.

Upon noting that you are submitting a cache for placement in sunny Florida, you can bet the reviewer is going to ask you how you plan on maintaining it. Without a good response, your cache placement would (al)most certainly not be approved.

However, releasing a TB can be. Perhaps the OP would like to take a TB on vacation, leave it in an existing cache and give it the mission of returning to you in the Mid-West? Drop it on day 1 of your vacation and see if it can beat you home!

It's always a bad idea. You may not find out until you get home that the cache is too close to a waypoint of a multi or puzzle, or that the area you chose to place your cache in has some sort of restriction.

Then it just becomes trash unless you can arrange a local to pick it up or move it.
