Soeners4
My family and I are going to take a trip down to Florida soon and want to place a cache there. However, we live in the Midwest and would not be able to maintain the cache. Is it okay to do this? Quote Link to comment
+tozainamboku
Here's what the guidelines say about placing caches on vacations It may be difficult to fulfill your maintenance obligations if you place a cache while traveling on vacation or otherwise outside of your normal caching area. These caches may not be published unless you are able to demonstrate an acceptable maintenance plan. It is not uncommon for caches to go missing, areas to be cleared, trails to be blocked or closed, objects used for multi-cache or puzzles to be moved or removed, etc. Your maintenance plan must allow for a quick response to reported problems. If you cannot maintain the cache or make arrangements for some to maintain it for you, don't place one. Quote Link to comment

+simpjkee
Don't do it unless you have someone who has agreed to maintain it for you. IMO, you should never place a cache unless you're willing and able to maintain it yourself. Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
As a side note - make sure you fully understand the guidelines before placing caches. If your not sure - couldn't hurt to go read them again. And even again!! Edited February 23, 2010 by StarBrand Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
It's best to have fun finding caches when on vacation and let the locals place them. They are aware of things like local geocaching regulations that you may not be. I also agree with Starbrand. Read the guidlines thoroughly before placing ANY cache. The few minutes it takes can save you loads of extra work later on. Quote Link to comment
+Gitchee-Gummee
Although said in previous posts, I'll say it a little differently. Placing a cache is not a drop it and forget it adventure. Upon noting that you are submitting a cache for placement in sunny Florida, you can bet the reviewer is going to ask you how you plan on maintaining it. Without a good response, your cache placement would (al)most certainly not be approved. Quote Link to comment
airdefenderuk
Although said in previous posts, I'll say it a little differently. Placing a cache is not a drop it and forget it adventure. However, releasing a TB can be. Perhaps the OP would like to take a TB on vacation, leave it in an existing cache and give it the mission of returning to you in the Mid-West? Drop it on day 1 of your vacation and see if it can beat you home! Quote Link to comment
+godavid
it like being a pet owner you have to lo0k after it !!! Quote Link to comment
+ChileHead
It's always a bad idea. You may not find out until you get home that the cache is too close to a waypoint of a multi or puzzle, or that the area you chose to place your cache in has some sort of restriction. Then it just becomes trash unless you can arrange a local to pick it up or move it. Quote Link to comment
