+Titus1919
The other night I had an encounter with the cops on a night cache. When we came out of the woods into the park he was waiting at my car. Already thinking of how I would explain the situation, he asked if I found it. Then he finished smoke and told me good luck on the rest. Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
Perfect ending. If he had asked, the best course is to tell them exactly what you were doing. Then next time maybe they can ask the next cacher "find it?". Plus Leo's in caching is a good thing. Of the forum Leo's that I know about, I can honestly say that I respect each one. +The magician & his assistant
You got off easy! I usually "bust" cachers and ask them a bunch of ?'s about the game, and get em a little nervous. Then ill drop a hint like so did you sign the log "TNLNSL" but I will only say the letters. They catch on that I am a cacher or sometimes the cache owner and then we talk about caching for 10 minutes. ahh its good entertainment and they usually leave a good log about encountering me! +Larry the pool guy
I told them what i was doing and after checking my License they took off after the last cache that i found. One of my caching buddys is a police officer and he has everyone doing it. They are just doing their hard jobs. Quote Link to comment
DannyCaffeine
I was walking out from underneath an overpass after finding a cache when I saw flashing police lights and I got a little freaked out. I figured that if I saw the cop he could see me so I just continued on my way to the road. Luckally he was at a traffic stop so he just smiled at me lol. If you feel your suspicious and there is an officer all you need to do is act normal. If your not doing anything illegal s/he can't do anything to you exept ask you what your doing. Keep your hands where the officer can see them and if you have something in your hand just drop it. Especially at night time since a GPS can look like a weapon. /tangent Quote Link to comment
+JL_HSTRE
I was caching several weeks ago in woods near an unfinished housing development. Cop asked what we were doing and I replied "Ever heard of geocaching?" He hadn't but the explanation of a scavenger hunt with GPS sufficed. I was amused when he suggested there should be booby traps if you went the wrong way looking for a cache. Quote Link to comment
+Wolfie01
I parked at a Light Rail Transit station to find a micro hidden there. As I was leaving my Jeep, a police office approached me and asked why I was parking and how long I was going to leave my Jeep there. I explained what I was doing and about Geocaching and he said "Wow, that's cool. Can I go find it with you?" So, I had a police office helping make the find and I'm pretty sure we had a new recruit after that. Quote Link to comment
+J the Goat
We have several local LEOs who cache around here. They regularly stop when they see people searching for their caches and will give hints if needed. Pretty cool... Quote Link to comment
+TeamFiestyMidgets
The leader of Team Fiesty Midgets (my hubby) is a Police Officer.....He was called out to a suspicious person call....only to find the guy was geocaching. He told him to be on his way as it was freaking the neighbors of the cache site out.....and come back to find it in the morning..... DH came home and told me about it and we started geocaching within the next month! Funny thing....we were looking for local cache's and found one that was set right at the Police Dept's Radio Shop! Literally in the landscape by the building..... So we placed one close to our house......and our street is LOADED with cops.....my house has a car, two doors down from me another officer and also one down the other end of the street from the cache one of our friends (another officer) has a take home car....so if they are all home, people will leave a message.....to many cops to stop today! Maybe I should let them know that all the cops could care less....we are in on it!!! Quote Link to comment
+rcm999
I was in a local park looking for a hide when a city cop approached me and asked if I needed any help and if I was okay. (I was walking around in circles) I began to explain to him what I was doing and he interrupted by saying "yeah, I have a buddy up in the next county who does that. I don't know much about it." He ended up spending about 20 minutes helping me look. He wanted to know exactly what we were looking for and I told him I wasn't sure, but both of us would know when we found it. I spent another 5 minutes or so telling him more about caching and gave him the URL to the site. We may not have found the cache, but we have another cacher in the area. Quote Link to comment
+mutt-
I've had 2 run in's with the law. Once while Placing a cache near by where I live. A cruiser pulled up next to me asking me if I was alright, informed the officers I was placing a geocache and where I was placing it at. even showed them what the container was. The second run in I had was while going after a cache in a tree. I was about 2 feet below when I heard an officer yell up to me "Sir please come down from that tree" after climbing back down and out of the tree he asked what I was doing. pointed to the cache from the ground and said "See that box up there towards the canopy of the tree there attached to the end of that rope?" he then responded "Oh your one of the geocachers huh. Were you able to get the container?" I told him I would have gotten it if he hadn't had me come out of the tree. He agreed and wished me best of luck. Quote Link to comment
