550 stuck in demo mode

My 550 is stuck in GPS Demo mode, touching Normal or WAAS does nothing. Unit is brand new, took out batteries, tried hard restart, reset all to original

..not sure how it works with the 550, but for a LOT of other electronic devices the way to kill demo mode is to set the clock.. try that?

Delete all maps in \Garmin folder (img files) in unit.

Remove SD card and turn on unit.

DO NOT DELETE, unless you have a backup.

To have the same effect you could rename the .img files to .imx

Don't know why it might help, but who knows?

Try going to the satelitte page and see if there is a selection to use with GPS on.

 

I don't know about the Oregons but the option is there for Colorado's

Have you sent maps to the GPS?

Just a wild thought, how about reloading or downgrading the firmware?

You don't get mass storage mode --> Your 550 doesn't show up on your computer as a drive? Sounds hopeless, call Garmin.

 

But, first you may want to try running the WebUpdater again just in case it will detect your 550.

Read the GCD downgrade instructions part way down the page and follow them being sure you've removed the removable memory.

Did you buy this GPS at a local store, or Online?

 

when I was looking at this thread, I figured you probably ended up with a Demo model, and not a regular GPS.

 

What type of store was it, and did you buy the one that was on display, that had to be boxed up?

 

You may need to exchange the GPS at the store, or call up Garmin on Monday.

 

I have heard of Garmin producing Demo Only units in the past for Display Only, and not for sale.

There is suposed to be matching Serial Number stickers, one in the battery compartment, and one on the cover of the box, tiny little stickers.

 

Do the Serial numbers on the box, and in the GPS match?

 

You may need to do an exchange.

GPS did work for a full day, played the demo Wherigo cartridge, loaded in a PQ, everything was working fine, was inside the house looking at some of the cache info and the map pages, and unit restarted by itself, and wamo its stuck in demo mode.

 

purchased the unit off of amazon.com the serial numbers on the box and unit match

 

web updater did not recognize the unit as it will not go into mass storage mode.

 

Guess ill call garmin on monday morning. Still have my backup GPS72 to get my caching fix with.

got into mass storage mode with the last trick downgraded to 2.75 ...... no luck

 

upgraded back to 3.1 ....... no luck

 

removed all PQ and wherigos ....... no luck

have you or someone else used demo mode to load maps to your unit? if so you will need to delete the demo key on the pc and then reload maps to the unit

Can you confirm that 450 and 550 uses same firmware?

There are no new firmware listed at Garmin for the 450, so for me this looks like firmware update for the 550 and not 450.

I believe the Oregon 450 and 550 have the same firmware

450 and 550 are the same firmware. Everything is named based on the 550 because it came out first but the 550 firmware is linked on the 450 page.

I had a camera problem with my Oregon 550 I got ahold of Amazon and they shipped me a new unit next day air. They picked up the bad unit the after.
