As we get ready for the games to begin, we need to remember the sacrifice these Athletes make to compete for Country, not only their time and money but as we see today sometimes even more.

 

Nodar Kumaritashvili of Georgia has been killed during practice, let’s keep his family in our prayers.

Well the opening ceremonies are now a part of history and the first nation flag was that of the country that is the keeper and originator of the Olympics, Greece, who by the way has 3 Olympic athletes competing; so by my count , there were 15 countries that had only a single athlete in the competitions.

 

Name the 15 countries and an Inuksuk Coin will be the reward.

 

Rules, post answers here even if it may not be complete (help each other out) and later after I’ve returned from caching I will either declare a winner if all the countries named that I noted during the ceremonies that had a single athlete or I'll help in the cointest. :laughing:

i watched the opening ceremonies last night. very cool. i love all the olympic tradition and celebration. even with the technical glitch, i thought the ceremony rocked! :P

 

although i could probably name several nations with only 1 competing athlete off the top of my head, the information on all participating nations and number of athletes is available online and fairly easy to find if you google it. i'll let someone else post the winning answers. :laughing:

I think Greece will participate with 7 athletes, but I am not so sure... and I think some are.... from the same family!!! :P

 

Anyway... the 15 countires are:

Cayman Islands

Jamaica is back!!! :) I remember seeing a movie with Jamaicans first participation in the Winter Olympics! :laughing: I loved that movie!!!

1) Cyprus will participate with 2 athlets, and they are brother and sister! :laughing:

 

2) Virgin Islands nad Venezuela are not participating in this games!

 

3) Mexico's hockey team didn't qualify for the games! :P

All though Albania is listed as having 1 I don't remember them coming in as a separate team I believe they were combined with another - so no to Albania

Same could be said of Tajikistan, Now I may have missed them but no matter cause I didn't note them - so no Tajikistan.

 

Now in one possibly more the 2 were mentioned but no cutting off the list, all countries must be listed and Gatoulis is right in his hint and almost correct in his list. :laughing:

I do not know if they can be combined... carrying the flag of your country is something extremelly honored, so to be together with an other country... But... since I haven't seen the opening ceremony... :laughing:

 

HEre TV showed only the high jump... sorry I do not know the names of the sports.. I hope tomorrow they will show more!!!

I am curious in these 2 countries! I am sure they were in the parade, but not alone?

 

I like many of the games in winter olympics!

I've a gut feeling they didn't, what I can tell you was you missed one (Gatoulis got it) BERMUDA

and tell Fredhead to watch for Israel in hockey at possibly the next Olympics (they have a big push on and Canadian Coaches now :P ) :laughing:

As for Albania, I watch the Greece Flag enter and then the next Flag was fro Algeria, so no to my knowledge Albania either did not qualify or did not send an athlete (which was why I send by my count, as I copied them down on a note pad)

It is not so nice! :) I can understand that if the sport of the athlet is not now but in some days.... and because Albania is a poor country.... maybe they couldn't send him from the begining, but on the other hand... an Olympic game opening ceremony is the greatest event in the world at that time! Olympic games are the greatest event in the world.... so... it is a huge honor to show that you are participating, and a huge honor to hold your country's flag at that day!!! Millions are there to watch the event and the flags!!! Probably this crisis is.... :D

Do not worry Albania and Tajikistan both were represented by one Athlete.

They were part of the Opening Ceremony, just seems the coverage from the networks is less than stellar.

 

My Wife and I were discussing we remember when we were young.. OWWW

Sorry when I was young she is still 29

That Olympic coverage was almost 24/7 and on every network seems now you have to hunt for many of the events.

Yes! and I was so glad to be able to see it from Australia. When I went to get groceries the clerk did the requisite "and how are you today?" I was so ecstatic that I replied with an enthusiastic GREAT!!! He gave me a good look...and then I explained how we won the gold :o

 

The flag is flying high in our window and I wear my Canada Olympic pin with pride!

Oh boy!!!! there were many ice hockey games!!! I am wondering when they will show any here! :D Probably they will show the finals!

 

till now I have seen Ski jumping, snowboard, figure scating and I think... biathlon! Of course.... not all... some parts! huh! :)

 

Oh! there is a sport with the name Skeleton??? strange name!!! Is this the sport the Armenian guy died??

In luge your feet are in front, and in Skeleton your head is! So... it looks just the opposite! :)

I would use the slow line... because that does not look safe. But... I guess that is why I am not destined for the Olympics. I mean could you imagine who came up with that idea. "I am going to get on a sled... ride on an icy half pipe ... on my stomache" ... ya great idea.
