Hints vs DNF

I'd like to place a cache that is easy to find - but not too easy. Would it be tacky use this as the hint?

If you need a hint, please log a DNF and email me, thanks.
I think this would give me a better read on the difficulty of the cache. I know for myself that I don't always log a DNF when I should -- a hint like that would give me a better incentive to do so. Edited by lee_rimar

There are few things in geocaching more annoying than sitting at the cache and decrypting the hint only to find there is no hint.

If you're going to do that please put it in the unencrypted text.

After the recent site update, the Garmin Colorado now has a hint added when the hint field is empty. The hint says "There is no hint for this cache"

Thanks for nothing (insert expletive of your choice)!!

On one of my caches I tend to be more concerned about the cacher's efforts for having made the trip than their logging of a DNF. In the description: "Feel free to read the hint. There's no sense in coming all the way and not find the cache."

The hint is fairly instructive on how to find the cache.

That allows the cacher to decide for themselves how much help they want.

I also have a D4 and a D5 cache. Those you'll have to contact me directly if you want assistance.

I guess what I'm saying is be straight forward about how much you'll help cachers. Don't put that kind of thing as the hint itself.

I see the OP has taken the previous posts to heart, but just to make it clear:

This kind of hint is pretty much a freeway salute to out-of-town cachers.

I came through your town on vacation and you want me to EMail you for a hint...really?

Exactly. And some go so far as to say you have to log a DNF for a hint too.

Like I'm going to go back for your stupid cache. I can see it, maybe, on a really cool cache but sure as heck not on some stupid micro on a stop sign.

All I was after here is the best way to get a good read on how many people try & fail to find the thing. Any suggestions on a good/better way to do that, any other way to encourage honest DNF logs?

I'm glad the OP has taken the quick and unanimous forum response to heart.

It isn't just the opinions of the few cachers who read the forums and answered this thread.

It is also what is posted on the Hide a Cache form under the enter a hint field..

Enter any hints or spoiler information below. This information will be encrypted on the site until a geocacher clicks on a link to unencrypt it, or decodes it on the trail. Text within brackets [like this] will not be encrypted. Please keep your hints short, so decoding it on the trail is easier. If you don't have a hint, leave it blank.

So clearly it would be acceptable to post your text elsewhere on the page, but not as the hint.

Or perhaps just come out and say-I'm really interested in whether I have correctly rated this cache. Please post your DNF's if you don't find it.
