Has anyone else been savaged by Caesar? If his tail wagged much harder it could cause a serious injury

 

But seriously, two dogs that come to mind that I had no problems with at all are Chester and Caesar.

It is with a heavy heart that I share that Caesar passed away very suddenly recently. He was in a specialist veterinary hospital and even Coco, Kazs' young assistance dog who many of your met at the Mega in Weston, gave blood in a desperate attempt to save Caesars' life, but it was too late.

 

We are absolutely devastated and shocked at the loss and sudden nature of his passing. I have lost a very dear companion and essential aide. Life without him and his help is takng some getting used to

 

I know how well he was known and loved among this community, and share this here partly as a tribute to him, and partly to make things easier for myself ... telling everyone individually over the next weeks and months would be hard.

 

Caesar started geocaching with me in August 2005, and since then we have found most caches together. Owing to his work as a Registered Assistance Dog, Caesar was with me all the time and had a Pet Passport which he used well.

 

Caesar and I cached together in England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Croatia, Canada and USA (San Diego, New York, Washington DC, Baltimore, Chicago, and throughout Michigan).

 

We have many treasured memories of caching abroad and as there's nothing like a dog to break the ice at events, I owe Caesar a debt for introducing me to so many people who have become friends.

 

We started caching together in the summer of 2005 and he became an excellent cache finder and on occasions retrieved the cache while I was still reading the clue! Indeed, Caesar was the reason I started geocaching. A friend suggested I buy a gpsr as a way of knowing how far I was walking with Caesar.

 

Caesar will be sorely missed, he was one of those dogs where to know him was to love him.

 

Caesar was out playing in the snow some twelve hours before the collapse that led to his death and I'm sharing the last photo taken of him before he went into hospital, as it's certainly a nice way to remember him.

Oh Wendy that is such sad news, and such a shock. Your last photo of Caesar is beautiful, capturing a moment of joy for him, and you, no doubt. He was such a well behaved dog, not even tempted by boystrous Ozzy trying to turn him to the naughty dark side.

Likewise ... something told me you had not been active in the forum for a while and I saw the sad news in your profile a couple of days ago.

 

I only met Caesar once, at the Harrogate Mega Event, but it's always been obvious how much you the two of you meant to each other and my thoughts are with you.

I am so sorry to hear this. I never met Caesar but felt like I knew him, as a very doggy person myself, he just seemed a wonderful dog. That last photo is beautiful, he looks so happy.

This poem really helped me when we lost jesta (almost 2 years ago now)

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

 

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

We were only talking about Caesar at an event last night ... then I find this post this morning

So sorry to hear your news - it is heartbreaking to lose any pet; but Caesar was so much more to you - a lifeline. Also, it is so much harder when it happens so suddenly as you can't even prepare yourself.

 

I remember walking into my first event (Burrington Combe - Feb 2007) and not knowing anybody (didn't even know what a cacher looked like!) and am pretty sure that Caesar was the first 'person' I spoke to! Definitely a good icebreaker.

 

I know that Caesar will live on, not only in your heart .... but in the worldwide caching community.

Wendy, I don't participate in this forum these days but someone mentioned your sad news so I felt I had to say how sorry I am for your loss.

 

I remember the first time I met you and Ceasar hunting for a cache around the Barbican and how struck I was at his placid, almost aloof, nature. We met several times since then and each time he seemed so aware of whatever you needed, possibly even before you realised it yourself.

 

Although I've had Sam for around 6 years now and have grown so attached to him I can't begin to realise how you must be feeling now. Just take some solace from the times you and Ceasar had together and from the obvious affection he was held in by all your geocaching friends.

 

As for that picture of him in the snow - treasure it, such a wonderful way to remember him.

Thank you everyone for your kind words here and to me personally and especially to those who contributed to Caesars' memorial fund (recentrly topped £1100 woo hoo)! Your kindness is very much appreciated.

 

Pretty much living day to day here, I still expect him to poke his nose into the bed first thing in the morning to greet me, and desperately miss his company and much needed help.

 

My health has not been brilliant these past weeks, so haven't been out as much as normal, a special thank you though to Fudgeman who helped me with a days caching recently.

 

Last week I had to go to Brussels for European Pet Night at the Parliament, last year I was keynote speaker and Caesar stole a few hearts, so it was tricky, but everyone was very kind.

 

In the afternoon before the event we had about an hour and a half to kill, so I set off to a nearby park for a cache, it was a metropolitan type park, something similar to Green Park in London. Before I knew it I was surrounded by four middle eatern type men, penned in between a bench and a fence, in what I think was a mugging type situation see log ... really made me realise how much of a deterrent Caesar must have been all these years!

I read this page last month and didn't want to reply at the time as I didn't know what you were going through. I also had only heard of geodog and never met him.

 

Now returning to the forum and seeing this at the top of the list again I thought I'd have a re-read. This time it's a little closer to home as we had to put our mutt to sleep last week. Time for Tea was a great mutt to go caching with and was one of the main reasons for caching.

 

My thoughts are with you and it's really nice to see that something is good coming out of Caesar's death in the form of the memorial fund. Really nice idea.

 

 

PS as for the "mugging", it's amazing how a friendly mutt put's people off.
