+earleinatruck Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 Just received this for Christmas. My reason for wanting a GPS was specifically for geocaching. Will this work or should I look to trade for another unit. Anything else in this price range? Quote
+briansnat Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 (edited) If it is specifically for geocaching, then no. It is an automotive unit. Using an automotive for geocaching is like playing tennis with a baseball bat, or using a butter knife as a screwdriver. It can be done but there is a better tool for the job. The negatives for automotive units include insufficient battery life, non field replaceable batteries, lack of water resistance, lack of durability, no compass navigation needle and they simply aren't physically designed to be held in the hand. It's like walking around holding a picture frame, where hand held units are more like holdng a TV remote. It seems the price range for that unit is $160-$200. Some good choices in that price range are the Garmin Venture HC, Garmin Legend HCX and DeLorme PN30. Since your chief use will be geocaching I'd lean toward the Delorme because it comes with a paperless caching feature that allows you to dowload the complete cache pages to the unit. angledge Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 I just got a Garmin nuvi 265T for Christmas & used it to find 3 caches today. It's not the perfect tool, & I'm hoping that after I read the manual I can figure out how to upload lists of coordinates, but so far it's been good enough for geocaching. It's also awesome for car directions, etc. Quote

They are awesome for driving too, you can change the voice on them for a little fun. Garmin Voices also you can get PIG Tones Quote
+SHENNY-TLC Posted December 26, 2009 Posted December 26, 2009 Our nuvi 255 snagged us our first dozen caches back when we were starting, once your totally sucked into the geocaching-vortex, your move up to an e-trex and an oregon etc to complement it. The 265wt will do just fine. Quote
+2beabout Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 It will not be the best for caching, but it will do for most on a nice day. I started with a Nuvi and found my first 50 that way. Then I ordered a Colorado for caching. I did like the Nuvi in the car, so I asked for my own at Christmas. I got it (205W), and have it set up with the advanced GSAK macro. Plan to route with it, and find with the Colorado. Quote
eor1122 Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Just received this for Christmas. My reason for wanting a GPS was specifically for geocaching. Will this work or should I look to trade for another unit. Anything else in this price range? I have a nuvi 205 and so far have been successful. Like somebody said it's like walking around with a picture frame.....but before you try one of those red-neck fixes (no offense to all of the other red-necks out there )............I've seen some clever ideas to make carrying easier but they usually require duct tape or super glue. I found an MP3 player holder in the yoga section of the sporting goods section of walmart that my nuvi fits in (I think yours my be different in siZe. It has a band that goes around your arm and a clear window to view the player (or in this case GPS) it was like $10. You may find something similar that will fit yours. Quote
+tango501 Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 my first finds were with a Nuvi 260W, what a way to learn geocaching be sure to put it into Pedestrian Mode, this will help some easiest way to upload is to use the Garmin Communicator or GSAK when I switched to a Garmin60Csx it was wonderful move up and the Nuvi has never left the car since the Nuvi does help with getting to the cache driving wise since most handhelds do not come preloaded with maps have fun and happing hunting welcome to the addiction Quote
