+Rainbow of Peace
How accurate are these and would do these really work? A friend who is a beginner is thinking of getting one of these instead of an actual GPS...As they do not want to deal with downloading and etc.... What are your thoughts? Plus, she isn't to electronically literate! LOL Quote Link to comment
+Rainbow of Peace
Also, can you download to these if you wanted to? Quote Link to comment
+hukilaulau
They work fine. I got one to use as a backup when I'm traveling in an unexpected area. You can buy a backup kit that adds new caches every month. Coincidentally, last night I finally got around to trying to install the backup kit (after buying it several months ago) and could not get it working properly. I have not called the Geomate folks yet, but from these forums it appears that they do everything they can to help with problems. Quote Link to comment

Motorcycle_Mama
Moving to the GPS and Technology forum. Quote Link to comment
+hukilaulau
Well....I am sure she will need the back-up kit! Not necessarily... There are plenty of caches pre-loaded on it. If she just wants to try out geocaching with a minimum of technical stuff this could work just fine... Quote Link to comment

A friend who is a beginner is thinking of getting one of these instead of an actual GPS... It should be noted that the Geomate.jr *is* a real GPS, utilizing the advanced SiRF Star III GPS chipset, the same chipset that many of the high-end Garmins use. The real difference is in the interface, which is vastly simplified for beginners. The Geomate.jr is a great first step for someone just getting started with geocaching. Later they can always upgrade to a more full-featured GPS. Quote Link to comment
