Updating a Garmine Etrex Legend

I have an older Garmin Etrex Legend GPS and I would like to update it. I'm not sure of the exact age but I could find out if needed. How can I tell what version is on it now and how do I download a new version to it? Also how do I tell what version my GPS can handle?

Thanks in advance!

Instruction from Garmin's website:

To find the software version of the device, please follow these steps:

1. Tap the 'Page' button until the "Main Menu" appears

2. Scroll down and select "Setup"

3. Scroll down and select "System"

4. Select the "Option" icon in the upper right hand corner and select "Software Version"

5. A window will appear showing the software version of the device

If you already own a cable and have all you need to do the update - go for it.

3.9 is more stable but I don't recall there being any real feature enhancements or improvements regarding accuracy/reception. Before 3.9 I had occasional shutdowns, never had any after 3.9. I still use my Legend as a backup unit.

Not sure it it would be worth buying a cable however...
