+BrrrMo Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 While searching for a location for my first Hide I discovered a very touching Memorial for two little girls that had been lost in a flash flood. There were small rocks, toys, and sea shells that had been placed there. Would it be PC to direct people who find my Hide to this memorial, and if it is ok, should I post the coord's on the Cache listing, or in the Hide itself? Quote
glorkar Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I've seen a couple of caches that do that sort of thing. I think it's acceptable to post the coordinates on the cache page. Of course, keep in mind to not hide the cache on or near any markers. Quote
+BrrrMo Posted December 10, 2009 Author Posted December 10, 2009 It is well away from the Cache. Quote
+WRITE SHOP ROBERT Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Yes, I think it would be appropriate, I have seen some like that. One even directed people to a memorial that no one knew the story behind. If you can find deteail on the trajedy, and either include them, or a link, that would even be better. Quote
+niraD Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Near my home is a memorial plaque in the middle of a parking lot. The plaque was used as a "Question to Answer" waypoint for a multi-cache. Quote
+StarBrand Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I've seen similar caches. As long as you aren't too close to the memorial itself. Go ahead mention its existence on the cache listing page (assuming you can do that within guidelines). Quote
+DragonsWest Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 (edited) GC1KG1Q - Remembering Christina This one immediately comes to mind. Less than a year after I moved to California young Christina Williams went missing. Her picture was everywhere and the search for her covered a lot of ground in the Central Coast. Astoundingly her remains would be found 7 months later, within a few miles of where she had been abducted. It's a heartrending memorial to Christina and more so because I found I had already forgot about it. The cache brings people to the memorial. Read some of the logs and see how you feel about doing one like this. Edited December 10, 2009 by DragonsWest Quote
knowschad Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I have one like that. I was out walking along the Mississippi one day when I stumbled upon the little homemade memorial. It was already quite old and neglected at the time. It mentioned the first name of the young man, but no more of the story. I hid a cache nearby... I had been planning on an ammo box, but decided that a smaller cache was less intrusive for a spot like that. The cache had been out for about a year, when a cacher emailed me the story. The police broke up an underage beer party one summer, and the boy jumped into the river to get away, where he was swept to his untimely death by the currents. If you do put a cache there, keep the cache page respectable and keep in mind that someone in the family or their circle of friends may be, or become, geocachers. Quote
+TheAlabamaRambler Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I've found a number of memorial caches, the one I most remember is "The Last Camp Of The Gypsy King' GC91AE Check out the picture gallery at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/gallery.asp...5d-a39bbf7b23f4 Quote
+WRITE SHOP ROBERT Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Had to bump this thread, since the others are posting to the duplicate, and letting this Real Discussion slip down the page...perhaps they can be merged?? Quote
oakenwood Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I'm hoping the Grounspeak powers-that-be change their minds about virtual caches, because places like that are perfect for virtuals, but not so much for "real" caches. Quote

Off topic and not going to happen. - such a place would now more properly be called a waymark. Quote

Probably time I took a better look at the guidelines to see if I might want to do one. Quote

And they make wonderful starting points for offset multis too. Back OT-it's perfectly acceptable to use a private memorial for a cache providing there is a location for the actual container that doesn't disrespect the memorial itself. I love finding caches that show me some local history that I wouldn't have discovered if not for the cache. Quote

It would be perfectly fine to do so and you can place the coords on the cache listing, inside the cache or both. Quote

If you post the coords on the cache listing, then please use "child waypoints" (from the menu on the upper right on the "edit cache" page, chose "waypoints") That way, seekers don't need to manually enter the coordinates from the text on the cache page, but instead will get them with their pocket query (or can download to the GPS directly from the cache page). I'd enjoy seeing a link to the cache page, should you get it published. Quote
Clan Riffster Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 The police broke up an underage beer party one summer, and the boy jumped into the river to get away, where he was swept to his untimely death by the currents. Darwin strikes again? Back on topic: One of my favorite aspects of this game is that we get to share all these really neat spots that we find with other, like minded kooks. I think such a memorial would be a blessing to find. One thing you should be cautious of is the wording you choose. With a few extra keyboard pecks, your cache page might stray into agenda territory. It might be a good idea to ask your local reviewer where the line is. Quote
