..don't forget there are a few existing ways to "meet and greet" geocachers in your area... (without *yet another* Facebook group to keep track of!)

As an example, in your immediate area are the "GTA Geofriends"... and their events!

(e.g. GC216RG)

A little to the north you have Central Ontario Geocachers... (http://www.centralontariogeocachers) and to your west you have Golden Horseshoe Geocaching.... (http://www.ghcaching.com)!

;)

COG has a monthly event and there are usually a few individual events as well.

If you can wait til the full moon in February, I will be hosting the 2nd Annual Moon of the Hoop & Stick Game Event. It will be a moonlight hike along the Seaton Trail. Last year we had a great turnout.

I don't have FaceSpace or MyBook but I would sure like to attend an event.

So far, all the events I have seen have only been accessible to those with automobiles (except the WWFM event at Cherry Beach, which was awesome!)

Unfortunately, even if I had a car I would not be able to go to the GC216RG event - it is full.

Yes, I am volunteering to assist in the organization of such an event - feel free to contact me if you also would like to have a TTC-accessible LTA (Lesser Toronto Area) event.

Jason, I think a facebook group is an excellent idea and I have joined yours too. It's a great way to see who the members are, to organize related events, to discuss things, etc. From experience it seems to work the best as most geocachers and people in general now use facebook and those that don't would join if they are interested in the group. Forums don't work well because only a very small percentage of geocachers ever read the forums, and email only works for small groups. Keep things active, do things and get people involved and you will find the group will be successful.

and to your west you have Golden Horseshoe Geocaching.... (http://www.ghcaching.com)!

Golden Horseshoe Geocaching (or GHMGC) is not just to the west of Brampton...it covers the entire greater Golden Horseshoe area stretching to Port Hope in the east, Barrie to the north, Waterloo and even London to the west and Niagara to the south. There have been more events currently in the east than in the west.

I am very interested but I wouldn't join any social networking site that requires you to identify yourself to it, and I am probably not alone.

I am sure that any arrangements made through that mechanism will be shared here as well so I will continue to monitor the forums.

Probably not since for the GHMGC just about everyone is on Facebook anyways and those that are not (3 of them) can check the web site or sign up for email notifications for the latest information and events. As always, everyone is welcome to come out to our events. At some point we plan on having one in the Don Valley area of Toronto if that interests you.

You are not alone. However, I have a Facebook account with a totally phony name I made up about a year ago. ;) I just did it to follow some bands, and various other interests of mine. Many businesses even offer special deals only to friends on Facebook. Of course when you do this, you have to explain to everyone you know who asks you if you have a facebook account about how you have the phony name, so that's kind of strange. Not as strange though as the people with common interests who have friended me just because we have common interests. :D

Anyways, to stay Geocaching related, I'm a member of two Geocaching groups (but not any GTA ones), and have several Geocacher friends, all under a phony name on Facebook. So I suppose you can stay connected anonymously.
