Another Unusual Reference Mark

I believe RMs are placed to:

1) Make it easier to find the station mark.

2) Provide a reference location if the mark ever needs to be reset.

It seems #1 would be the reason here. It looks to me as if the copper plug was covered with moss when you got there, but the disk was easily findable. Pointing you to the exact location with ease. I suppose a metal detector would also make the locating process easy, but when the RM was set they weren't quite as available as today.

I do not see this reference disk listed as a RM in the box scores. It is first mentioned in the 1952 recovery. I would consider it an unusual type of a witness post.

There is also a conflict between the 1934 and 1936 recoveries on whether or not there really was an underground mark. The original description seems to be pretty positive.

Very unique. Thanks for sharing the photos.

This was like erecting a witness post--except they used a reference mark disk. I like how they stamped "PLUG IS STATION" on the disk to prevent confusion. Bottom line: It allowed the survey party to make the station easier to find, while preserving it in its original setting.
