+Mega Scooter Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Notice the measurement is center to center. Sorry I was so sloppy with the tape photo. Not only is there a lot of slack in the tape but there is a parallax problem because the tape is so high above the Marks. I’m glad they didn’t replace the copper plug with a disk, but, why put a RM so close? RD4006 PLUG IS THE STATION MS Quote
AZcachemeister Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 I believe RMs are placed to: 1) Make it easier to find the station mark. 2) Provide a reference location if the mark ever needs to be reset. It seems #1 would be the reason here. It looks to me as if the copper plug was covered with moss when you got there, but the disk was easily findable. Pointing you to the exact location with ease. I suppose a metal detector would also make the locating process easy, but when the RM was set they weren't quite as available as today. Quote
kayakbird Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 (edited) I do not see this reference disk listed as a RM in the box scores. It is first mentioned in the 1952 recovery. I would consider it an unusual type of a witness post. There is also a conflict between the 1934 and 1936 recoveries on whether or not there really was an underground mark. The original description seems to be pretty positive. RD4006''IN A BOULDER LYING SOME DISTANCE BENEATH THE SURFACE. ABOVE RD4006''IT IN ANOTHER BOULDER IS AN OLD TYPE STATION MARK IN A DRILL RD4006''HOLE. A CROSS IN THE DISK WHICH IS DIRECTLY ABOVE A CROSS IN RD4006''THE BOLT MARKS THE STATION. THE LETTERS U.S. ARE CUT IN THE RD4006''N SIDE OF THE BOULDER. Errors in the DATASHEET Marker and Setting lines are very common. kayakbird Edited December 6, 2009 by kayakbird Quote
+PFF Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 Very unique. Thanks for sharing the photos. This was like erecting a witness post--except they used a reference mark disk. I like how they stamped "PLUG IS STATION" on the disk to prevent confusion. Bottom line: It allowed the survey party to make the station easier to find, while preserving it in its original setting. -Paul- Quote
+Sagefox Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 A very nice find. I would love to run across something like this. Quote
