Interesting NGS Datasheet Typos

OK, this one is just for fun. No finger pointing. It's a tough job.

But - sometimes a datasheet just tickles the funny bone, right?

 

Browsing the Pleasanton CA area for an upcoming Thanksgiving trip to visit relatives, friends, geocache, benchmark hunt. Saw this, just had to share:

HS3987: "....A 5/8-INCH COPPER COATED ROAD DRIVEN TO GRADUAL REFUSAL AT A DEPTH OF 83 FEET."

 

Amazing what one little extra letter can do.

Here's another one! Same area. Not a typo, but interesting anyway.

 

HS3995: "....6.6 FEET NORTHWEST OF ELECTROLIER NUMBER 1149...."

 

Luckily, good ol' wikipedia came through on the "ELECTROLIER".

I certainly didn't have a clue!

 

I'll post a picture, if I get there, and if it's still there (a bit doubtful).

Here are the NGS specs. for driving stainless steel rod marks:

 

11. Repeat step 10 (adding rod sections) until the rod refuses to drive further (anchored), or until a driving rate of 60 seconds per foot is achieved. In the event that the rod will not sufficiently slow down to meet desired driving rate, terminate upon reaching 90 feet (22.5 rods). This will leave about 2 feet of rod out of the hole. If possible, let the rod set overnight, then drive the remaining 2 feet of rod to determine whether driving rate has reduced. If rod feels secure in ground, use this depth even though minimum driving rate of 60 seconds per foot has not been met. If the rod turns freely in clockwise direction, contact NGS for a decision to drive additional rods. Sometimes, all that is necessary to achieve a well anchored rod is driving it a few more feet. In other instances an additional hundred feet may be required. Indicate in the written station description the depth of rod, and whether it was driven to refusal or met the slow driving rate. Also include a description of any unusual mark setting circumstances.

That's only slightly unusual. The goal is to hit bedrock with the bottom of the rod, and in some areas there is a lot of clay to get through before you find rock.

Good point. That would be true around my house (adobe), for instance.

 

I'm used to looking for benchmarks in Yosemite, where bedrock is about, oh, 1/2" below the accumulated duff. :laughing:

 

(And backpacking experiments conducted about 35 years apart prove that the bedrock in the Sierra Nevada has been getting even harder. :laughing:)

I've found a few typos, but nothing that struck me quite as funny as the copper coated road--none that I recall, anyway. Here was one interesting entry I recalled finding while perusing stations...

For those of you not familiar with geography in that neck of the country, Twenynine Palms USMC base is about 100 miles SW of EU0944 in CALIFORNIA. Not actually that far away by Montana standards. Dad's old regiment was posted there last I knew. He would have been OkieMarine if he'd lived long enough to get into benchmark hunting. He would have enjoyed it as long as someone else did the computer work.

 

After a bit of searching, CROSS number 2 showed up:

A very lengthy recovery note from 1965 was added to the AZ version of CROSS (1934) that should have been added to the note for the CA version of CROSS (1935). A "typo" that I think is easily explained or understood.

Deja Vu all over again

 

Still scouting next brass hunting trip with KayakBird and ran across another "typo" where a recovery note for one PID got plunked into a totally different DS.

 

I was looking at

Went benchmarking today and found 2 out 3 for the day. Tough hunting some of these marks out here.

 

I tell you what!

 

It is a real pain trying to find the benchmark that is "SET ON TOP OF A 5/8 INCH COPPER COATED ROAD, ENCASED IN A 6 INCH TILE PROJECTING 10 IN." We just could not find any ROAD let alone find that 5/8 inch copper ROAD!! We posted pictures showing all four directions on the log page, but here is a picture looking south (the disk is supposed to be 64 feet north of the center of the road) so you may try finding that described road. :)

Another one of those elegantly set marks in Maine...

Actually, you probably already know this, but the old road was not quite as staight as the current road. Here is the road approximately as it was in 1953 (the map is current with the dashed line being the path of the road in 1953).

Despite posting it in another thread, because I can't search it appears, here's a fun one in Florida with no location. It's a true 'locationless' benchmark:
