Have a look at this URL (from locuslingua on twitter):

Google has got it right to drop Garmin shares by 16% and TomTom shares by 21% in a day.

Even, according to the article, iPone shares have dropped. All because of Google Maps.

I think we will get free map updates shortly from Garmin. They must try and keep market share somehow.

OK all you geeks with your "geek-talk". Please could somebody explain this thread in EVERYDAY language to us technologically challenged individuals that are not "in the trade" so to speak so that we can all understand and benefit from the technological advances that MIGHT also be useful to us. :(

Any explanations will be appreciated. :D

Ok, you will be familiar with the basic functions of Google Maps and probably Google Earth as well. You may have also seen options pop up asking if you want directions. Well, until recently, directions and routing (like your turn by turn GPS) was not possible for South Africa, but now you can do this. You can click on a spot or type in an address and then route to it from another point. If you do this on a GPS enabled phone it will route you from your current location.

The street view is quite simply just that. If you go into Google Maps and head for one of the major US or European metropolitan areas, lets say London for example, you will notice that the "pegman" on top of the zoom slider will change from grey to orange. This means that street view is available. You can then drag him onto any road (available street views will be highlighted in blue when you drag him across the map) and you will see a street view, such as this example of Trafalgar Square approaching from Whitehall road. You can then move along the roads in any direction, turn at junctions and look around you at shops, signs etc. as if you were there.

Hope that helps.

Also Google Maps is free to use and download on a mobile phone.

Up to now there were no turn by turn directions, but it sounds like with Android (Android = Operating System for phones) that is all changing.

So why must someone pay for a GPS, pay for Map Updates (in the case of Garmin) when there is a good, frequently updated, free version available? This is the reason that the shares in Garmin & TomTom have dropped according to the article.
