Picnic in the Garden Event

Recommended Posts

With such glorious weather that we have been having lately, it seemed fit to arrange a nice picnic Event. It will take place on Saturday, 14 November from 09h30 to 14h00.

We also plan to do some caching at the Gardens. We know that many of you have probably done all the caches there, but it would still be great if you would come to the Event for some socialising.

Between ourselves and besem we've worked out the co-ords for the 4 mystery caches there. There are also two multis (one by GlobalRat and the other by GreenJaM) and two traditionals. We've also been in contact with Skywalker and Leia regarding their sneaky AROMERC EHCAC hide, and they plan to have it checked/fixed before the Event. So if you are keen to visit the West Rand and meet some fellow geocachers, this is the Event to attend!

Since the 94.7 Cycle Race is on the 15th Nov, we are hoping that some cachers (who are doing the Race) from other provinces will be able to attend this Event - it would be AWESOME to meet you guys!!! So if you will be up in GP over that weekend, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pop round to the Event.

Please remember to put this Event on your watchlist for any changes or updates!

We hope to see as many of you there as possible! Remember that there will still be time in the afternoon to do more geocaching in the West Rand area - so make a day of it! :signalviolin::sad::D

Sounds great. If it is anything like the previous Event that you arranged it ought to be an awesome day. Good luck and enjoy.

Whoop! Whoop!! We will have a KZNer geo-cacher - DRDM Raider - popping round to this Event! How lucky is that to have a visitor from a far! Of course if Wazat also comes, we'll have more visitors from our lovely province - KZN. But seriously, all cachers from anywhere and everywhere are welcome to come. It would be great to share some stories!

Gerhard, ek't al lankal daai puzzels opgelos - jy sal maar net hoef saam te loop! Die ene is nogal 'n ent se stap, hoor, so dalk moet jy jou studiemateriaal op 'n iPod laai en so in die stap swot.

It'll also be cool to meet the team I worked with to log Twin Pretoria recently. (;

Oh my...with all the Afrikaans on the go, I think I should also post something in die Taal. Please excuse all the errors - I'm English speaking and got a "D" for Afrikaans 2de Taal waneer ek in skool was!!

We have family commitments (another geocaching team “Klitsgras” our oldest son will tie the knot on the 14th November). We know our sandpit team family “DiePienaars” will also visit Gauteng but will be with us and not at the event.

Hope you enjoy the day at the lovely Gardens and maybe you can setup a plan “B”, the last picnic event in JHB from Global Rat was moved due to a heavy rain storm.

Oh WOW!!! RedGlobe...that is AWESOME news! Congratulations. We hope your son has a great time at his wedding day and we wish him all the best for his future! We will miss you all, but of course you have a VERY valid reason not to be at the Event :) !

Thanks for the advice. We'll arrange to have a space at the Restaurant (Eagle Fayre) should the weather not be condusive to a picnic. The hike for the caches will still continue :) .

Oh WOW...Oh WOW!! Guess who'll be attending our Event...the one and only....the amazing....the incredible......JORS!!! Whoop! Whoop!!

Our apologies for going crazy....hee hee. It is just that we are honoured to have the oldest geocacher (in terms of years geocaching not in person's age), attending our Event. Thanks Jors! We feel very special - you made our day! :)

MeganZA and I are attending the Pinnochio Pantomine at the same time as the event and will therefore not be able to attend. :(

I hope Besem do not suffer from claustrophobia with all the cachers following Pinky the main brain in this park. Forget about the water bottle, there is enough to carry you as well. Some interesting stats of the caches not found by me.

There are 7 caches less than 1 km radius including the event. Then there are 10 caches between 1 and 5 km range. Then there are 19 caches between 5 and 20 km range. In this range there are two caches not available.

AROMERC-EHCAC could be a problem as 4 DNF’s were logged. Small stream VII is a no no cache. The owners threatened to call the police the last time. If all the cachers arrive at this location all at once we could have a picnic in a weird place. The last person had a lot of comemnts about this cache in no uncertain terms.

It should be a good event. Hope the rain stays away. Gerhard

The AROMERC-EHCAC should be sorted before the event, as the cache owners said they would check it out for us. We were hoping to get our Monkey Business also sorted before the Event, but it doesn't look like it is going to happen due to the death in the property owner's family. We really want to get their permission to place the new hide.

I think there are a total of 8 caches in the Gardens themselves - 4 mysteries, 2 trads and 2 multis. The Event makes it 9 and then if the one just outside (AROMERC-EHCAC) is sorted it will be 10!! But you are right, there are loads of other caches available in the area - the views for many of them are also amazing!

I agree with you - I also hope that the rain stays away for the day (it is more than welcome to come during the night!)

Hey everyone....the AROMERC-EHCAC (GC1PKEJ) has been checked out and it is still snug and safe in its hiding place!! So all the DNFs mean that the hide eluded the cachers!! That is how a cache should be hidden - safe from muggles and a challenge for geocachers!!

So everyone, be prepared for some extra fun with this one!!

Weather forecast from accuweather is not looking to good for Saturday

Roodepoort has rain forecast at this time:

Lets hope it clears up over the next few days:

Hi Damhuisclan..thanks for the weather report!! Let's hope the weatherman makes a bit of an error and God looks favourably on us and gives us a dry morning. Even if it is overcast, it will be great but the rain just has to stay away for the morning. From 3pm or so the rain can come!!

My fingers are crossed.

I think Gerhard (from his previous post) will have his toes crossed as well.

Looks like Signal the frog and the other Geocaching gods smiled on us yesterday.

We had a few drops as we were leaving, but the drive home proved to dry.

We saw a huge shower over Alberton though.

The logs and photographs bear testimony to the fact that those who came to the event were not disappointed.

I would like, on behalf of all who came, to thank Geo936 and Besem for putting it all together and co-ordinating this event.

You have set such a high standard standard I don't know how you are going to raise the bar. But knowing you, the next event will be amazing too.

Thanks to everyone who came. Without you there would be no event.

See you all next time!

Oh WOW...what an AWESOME Event!! Everything just fell into place and worked out brilliantly!! Thank you to all the cachers that attended - each and every one of you made the successful Event that it was! Thank goodness that the weather turned out in our favour.

It was fantastic to spend some quality time with some of the cachers at the picnic and we know that the hike to do the caches in the Gardens was also fantastic. Rolf said that it made the hike seem so much shorter as there was always someone to chat to. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and our kids sort of behaved too (even without their naps, etc.).

Thank you to Tinkerbell-GP that was such a honey with the kids - they love you and don't stop chatting about the Aunty that has "fairy dust" :) . You were a great help!

But thanks to everyone - we'll definitely do something again soon, as we enjoy your company and would like to have more opportunities of getting to know you better and better each time!
