Delorme PN-20 and SD Cards

Hi all! I have a Delorme PN-20. I need to download some more topo states, but my current memory card (1 GB) will not fit the new states. Does anyone know what is the largest SD memory that the PN-20 can handle? Can you put an 8 GB one in it? Please let me know asap as I'm going to be taking a trip soon, and want to add several states (routes and pocket queries) onto a new card.

Thanks!

PN-40s will accept SDHC cards up to 32GB and some are using those.

Not sure if the PN-20s will accept the 32GB'rs.

However, the 16GB SDHC cards are more popular and will also work in the PN-20s.

Make sure that your card reader supports the SDHC cards as many of the older card readers do not.

Depending on how long(if ever) since your last firmware upgrade, that may be your first step

towards using the higher capacity cards. I don't remember if the first runs could handle the

HCs or not, I came onboard w/the PN-40s. The latest firmware is a very positive upgrade in

all respects.

Good catch, RRL.

Yes, the latest FW is needed for the 4GB - 16GB SDHC cards.

I was running a 4GB SD(nonHC) card with the earlier FW in my PN-20,

but that was then and I would not recommend that today.

This may sound like a dumb question, but how do you update your firmware? I may have done so already, and just don't know if I did?

Check here for latest firmware, Version 1.6, info:

On your PN-20, I think that it's Menu - Device Setup - Info (or similar).

If you have updated, I expect that you'd recall it. :signalviolin:

16GB is a good sized SDHC card for the PN-20, as long as you don't try to use all of it. :signalviolin:

10-11GB or so of pre-cut Delorme Topo7/8 maps may max out the PN-20's file addressing capacity. That max is based on the total number of files that can be addressed at once, and not necessarily on the file size.

The PN-30/40 devices seem to be able to address all the pre-cut Delorme Topo7/8 files that you can load on to a 16GB SDHC card.

Whatever card you decide on, do like Cowboy says and get a reader that will read SDHC's too.

I bought one that does both at Wallyworld for like $8. Works great.

Also, when I first got a PN-20 I used a Kodak 2GB (Class 1 ???). Later, I bought (Newegg.com---$12) a Kingston (Class 4 type) 4GB and noticed a doubling in map redraw speed on my -20. Even with more map data stored on it. This newer card has 5 states' worth of T8 data (pre-cuts/regional) and purchased map data (aerials/USGS topo) of several hunting/fishing areas. And still has 1.5 GB of spare room.
