+the_bell_dingers Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 So with all this talk about the number of active caches, does anyone know of how many active Geocachers there are? Active as in: Geocached in the last two months Not: jumping jacks active Quote
+the_bell_dingers Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 No one knows. Grounspeak doesn't even know? Is there an estimate? Quote
+Anno Lynke Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 (edited) 42 of course my math may be a little off but I can guarantee there are at least 42 or just like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop 3 you choose Edited October 21, 2009 by Anno Lynke Quote
+Gitchee-Gummee Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 No one knows. Grounspeak doesn't even know? Is there an estimate? They know, but if they told you, then they would have to kill you. Then there would be one less! Quote
+the_bell_dingers Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 but I don't want to get archived! Quote
+Gitchee-Gummee Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 BUT, you would get a nice big cache container! Quote
+the_bell_dingers Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 I will still be benchmarked and still archived Quote
+JohnE5 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 It's on the homepage isn't it? Only counts last 7days though. "There are 925,540 active caches worldwide. In the last 7 days, there have been 672,211 new logs written by 86,403 account holders. " Quote

knowschad Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I have not cached for a month due to weather. That explains a lot! Quote

GOF and Bacall Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Using my previously proven powers of deduction I'm gonna say KnowsChad meant that explains why you have time to ask all those questions. Quote
+Chrysalides Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Since running all over the place looking for plastic containers, ammo boxes and small metallic tubes just to sign the pieces of paper inside it is highly irrational, I'd say the number of active geocachers is an irrational number. Quote

+Jeep_Dog Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I will still be benchmarked and still archived Untrue. If they really wanted to "bury" you for good, to ensure you are forever forgotten - they would Waymark you instead. Quote
+Minimike2 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Take a Tsun geocoin with you to the grave. You will be dug up within 2 hours. Quote

Motorcycle_Mama Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 (edited) No one knows. Grounspeak doesn't even know? Is there an estimate? How would anyone know how many people have "geocached in the last two months"? Edited because I left a word out. Edited October 22, 2009 by Motorcycle_Mama Quote
knowschad Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Actually, Motorcycle Mama (and ONLY Motorcycle Mama) knows the answer, but she has been sworn to absolute secrecy. She can't even admit that she knows. Quote
GOF and Bacall Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! OH MY GAWD! I think MM has sprung a leak! Anybody got some duct tape? Quote
knowschad Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! OH MY GAWD! I think MM has sprung a leak! Anybody got some duct tape? Well, I hear the best stuff is available at this time of the year, generally in the sporting goods area. It isn't as shiney as the stuff you can get the rest of the year. Wally World is a good place to start, because you can probably grab a cache or two in the parking lot. Quote
+ventura_kids Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 71,100 cachers have over 200 finds. I would venture a guess.... the majority of cachers have logged less than 200 on geocaching.com . I would also venture a guess....the majority of cachers do NOT log their finds on the Web. note: I base this on logsheets in my current and past hides. Most of those names on the logsheet are not seen anywhere in the on-line geocaching find logs. Therefore, I would guess there are actually 271,100 geocachers finding caches. Quote

majormajor42 Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 one might be able to figure out the number of geocachers based on traffic to the website? http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/geocaching.com Also, how many premium members are there? Quote
+Isonzo Karst Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Using the user ID# URL, it seems that there are now over 2,750,000 accounts. Active? no telling. 42 is always the right answer. The alexa site seems wildly inaccurate to me Says that German cachers use the site more than U.S. cachers! maybe they compared one U.S state to Germany? 113,899 caches in Germany 71007 caches in California It wouldn't surprise me that German cachers are the second largest user group, but not the largest.
