If you are on a budget, I'd suggest a Garmin Venture HC. It will come with MapSource. Install that and then download/install Ibycus USA from this site - http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/19/ and download/install nroute from the following site - http://www8.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=575 Quote

You will need more than a GPS software downloaded to your computer, you will also need to purchase the hardware to receive the GPS signal and convert that to something your computer can use. See the post above this one for some low cost choices. Quote
+sledgehampster Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 (edited) You would need a receiver to "convert" the satellite signals into something the laptop can use. You can get a variety of Bluetooth, USB and other GPS made just for a laptop. A good source for information is http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/ Hope to see you over there. +Woodstramp Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Delorme makes those LT-20 kits (USB antenna and software). Here's one for $34 on Ebay.... http://cgi.ebay.com/DeLorme-Street-Atlas-U...=item33520ad809 A friend of mine has used one of these on business road trips for years and loves it. Quote
+port7588 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 gps for laptop? well I bought (Delorme lt-20 at buy.com for $20.00 with mapping atlas 2008 wrks fine in car but have yet really understand the full features to help me find my first geocache Quote
+sledgehampster Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 (edited) wrks fine in car but have yet really understand the full features to help me find my first geocache It is not really made with geocaching in mind, as far as actually "finding" the cache. The DeLorme software and GPS are used for street routing to get you close to the cache site. Most certainly would not go thru the woods carrying a laptop searching for a cache! I download the caches to Street Atlas and my handheld GPS. SA routes me to the cache location then I use my handheld to actually seek the cache. We now return this thread to it's original topic, sorry for the derailment... Edited October 8, 2009 by sledgehampster Quote
+ras_oscar Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Microsoft streets and trips can be purchased with a GPSr. I use it to create my hitlists. I suppose you could also use it to find, although it really won't zoom in far enough. Quote
