+DragonflyTotem
I'm just getting started in all of this and over the past week or so have picked up several trackable coins. My plan was to most likely keep them as a collectable and was wondering about the activation end of things. If I plan on keeping these and breaking them out to use as event discoverables, should I go ahead and activate them? It seems that is a "safe" thing to do now rather than wait in case anything happens to them. Is that what others do as well? Or is there some reason that I should be waiting on activating them that I'm not yet understanding? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
+Droo
Welcome to the madness........... Have you found and read the FAQ? Behind the Trackable Items tab are a few links to some good resources about coins and bugs. Also the pinned thread at the top of the Forum has another list of essential links. I've linked them for your coinvenience. Now that you've bought your first shiny doodads (assuming you bought them not pilfered them out of geocaches in which case you just stole someone else's travelers) you have to decide what your point was in starting down this road. Do you want to hoarde your shiny baubles and just bring them out to show other geocachers at events and such? Then you may want to activate them and share the icons at these said gatherings of like minded fools.... err, I mean folks. Or do you want to get rich moving and selling these trinkets on Ebay? In which case unactivated are more desireable than activated, overall. Or do you just want to set them free in caches and hope they travel far and wide bringing smiles to cachers along the way? Or if you want both you can make Proxies and release the fake coins while you keep the real ones home for your enjoyment? Ain't if fun to have so many choices? All you have to do if figure which one is the one you like. Edited September 30, 2009 by Droo Quote Link to comment

+StealthRT
I would definitely activate them so others can discover them at events. The only benefit of not activating them is that in their unactivated state they are more easily sold in the future. Quote Link to comment
