+Geo-raldo Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 We recently started caching and have decided to put out a few caches of our own. We placed one in a cemetery and we got two complaints. The first was why didn't we use the hollow logs for a hiding place. Did we not see them. The second was from a different cacher asking that we change the name to not include any punucation marks. I was slightly offended by both of the remarks. Am I just being sensitive? I wanted to say that if they had a better hiding spot then why didn't they hid a cache there first and secondly I will name my cache whatever I want. Quote
+Knight2000 Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 (edited) I agree with you. You are the one doing them a favor by hiding it for them to find. It doesn't matter where they think it should be. It's not their hide! It's your hide. Put it where you want and call it what you want. Jeez. Just ignore them or if you are ornery tell them to sod off. *edit to add that I have had a negative log from a cacher on a cache that was difficult to retrieve. After they thought about it they realized that they were just upset and they changed their log. (They ripped their clothes, fell and didn't end up getting the FTF prize.) +jasondulac Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 even though it's nice to get complaments on your cache's it's yours if you like the hideing spot thats all that should count Quote
+Cache O'Plenty Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 (edited) The complaint about the "comma" has me curious.... The only thing I can think of is that they are importing their PQs into some program (like, maybe Excel) and the delimiter they use is the comma. Thus the import gets screwed up by one column. If that's not it, then what's the problem? As for where to hide... That's the hider's call. Whether to search for it is the cacher's call. That's it. Edited September 30, 2009 by Cache O'Plenty Quote
+ecanderson Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Them folks in Wisconsin is just mad because they knows that winter is a-comin'. Ignore 'em. Place your hides and have a good time. They should be glad they's finders and not residents of the place! Really - some people have nothing better to do than gripe. I'm sure most of your finders will be happy that you've taken the time to start placing caches. If they want to complain, let 'em drive to Sheboygan! Good grief - you've even been good enough to give them 3 regulars out of 4 caches. You're doing great. Quote
+StarBrand Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 The world is full of insensitive jerks. Ignore the comments. Quote
+wenestvedt Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Pfft, Cheese Heads: they're just mad Farverevre is playing again but not in Wisconsin. Signed, a Minnesotan. :7) P.S. Honestly, punctuation? Lots of caches have punctuation in the names, and any data export/import should wrap such a string in double quotes. Ignore 'em. Quote
knowschad Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Put out a new cache named, "No, I Won't Hide My Cache in the Hollow Logs!!!!" Quote
+rob3k Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Complaining about punctuation in the name is just nutty. If this site allows it, you need to work out things on your end to deal with it. I could see asking very politely to make the change, but certainly not demanding. On a semi-related side note I initially named a cache with HTML commenting tags around the title and noticed that causes gc.com to hide the link to the cache on several screens, so I changed it to something else before publishing. But in my case I'd be 'breaking' the website. Quote
+Castle Mischief Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Some people are jerks. Most cachers are people. Learn to separate the signal from the noise. Quote
knowschad Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 (edited) I don't see the one about punctuation, but I assume this is the one about the hollow logs: Nice spot Did u notice the hollowed out trees? Tftc If so, I'd hardly call that a complaint. You also have some very nice comments, like this one on another cache of yours: Hands down one of our favorite caches of the day and worth the trip back here!! Very nicely stocked cache and a nice lil lake here!!! T-braclets and GC L-Puzzle box and gecko TFTC SL Edited September 30, 2009 by knowschad Quote

+slukster Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Nice spot Did u notice the hollowed out trees? Tftc That sounds like a cacher just pointing out some cool trees in the area? Unless he emailed you privately to suggest moving your cache. Quote
+briansnat Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Am I just being sensitive? Yes. If you hide caches not everybody is going to be happy with them. However if you receive a lot of complaints you need to decide whether they are justified or not. If they are, then perhaps you should re-consider your hide style. If they aren't then they only reflect poorly on the person who posted the log. Quote
+ArcherDragoon Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 I may be wrong on this...but the punctuation thing may be related to those using CacheMate...it doesn't handle titles with punctuation very well... This came up in another local forum...I have a pretty good feeling who asked about the punctuation thing... Quote

This came up in another local forum...I have a pretty good feeling who asked about the punctuation thing... You get what you pay for at $10. Anyone authoring software for someone else's database had better be prepared to handle anything the database's owner considers valid data! Kind of a general principle when playing in the 3rd party space... Quote

This came up in another local forum...I have a pretty good feeling who asked about the punctuation thing... I may be wrong too (and probably am), but my first guess about the punctuation was that there are a whole bunch of cemetery caches in WI starting with "WSQ", and this is the only one in that group that starts with "WSQ-". Maybe someone just likes things to be consistent. Actually, now that I look at more of them, about half of them start with "WSQ:", so there goes that theory.. unless all those cache owners also got emails asking for removal of punctuation too. The CacheMate theory is looking more reasonable. Quote

+Sol seaker Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 There's whole topics just on the idea of hiding caches in cemetaries- people fighting for the pro's and con's. If you read the forums for a while you'll see everyone has a different idea about everything and you can't take it personal. I've always said to my friend, who won't read the forums because of all the conflicting strong opinions, that this is actually a good thing. These conflicting strong opinions means that geocachers come from every walk of life. It is a place where we all can meet and have something in common. We all come together here no matter what our background, polictical affiliations, religious affiliations, etc. There are many different types of people here all who have different strong opinions about all sorts of things. It is really good we are finding a middle ground to meet on. Don't worry about the areas we don't meet in. There will always be those. I am just glad we have this common ground to meet on. Quote
