Jester1970
Are the Garmin SD cards which are used for Oregons, etc branded as Garmin, or are they just plain off the shelf SD cards? Also, are they locked, or can I transfer data to a computer/ other SD as a backup? Quote Link to comment
+The Patrician
I don't know about the Oregon, but plain vanilla micro SD card work fine in the etrex Legend. I buy them from 7dayshop: http://www.7dayshop.com about £4.50 for 2 GB. Regards, Neil Quote Link to comment
Jester1970
I should clarify, it's the ones you buy with Garmin OS Discoverer mapping on them. Quote Link to comment

I ask this because the majority of software loaded on SD cards is locked to the cards hidden internal serial number.. I tried to use a backup copy of my Garmin maps, but it never worked. I 'think', he means he has a spare back up of brand x in his gps. without a logo, while the original is floating around in the attic somewhere, possibly hijacked by mice. might wanna check/confirm with him tho Edited September 26, 2009 by Ryuchan Quote Link to comment
Jester1970
To clarify further, my SD card/Micro SD came in Garmin packaging, but the SD card had nothing on it to show it was the 1:50,000 Garmin GB Discoverer mapping (check out the Satmap version by comparison). Should an original Garmin SD have GARMIN anywhere on it? Quote Link to comment
+Bear and Ragged
Mine came on a SanDisk 2GB card, with a SanDisk adaptor. All external packaging and printed matter is Garmin. (Purchased from Garmin -would they supply 'dodgy' items. ) Quote Link to comment
Jester1970
Thanks, that's what I have. I was curious as Satmap ones seem to have a brand label on them. Quote Link to comment
+Stuey
They are not branded "Garmin", but are unbranded (well, mine is a Sandisk). Quote Link to comment
+burtsbodgers
Hi the maps come on unbranded cards and you can make a backup But the problem comes as the backup will only work on the original card! i have tried but cannot find the code hidden in the card, so i could make another to use in the field leaving the original safely at home. A friend recently lost his gps and maps and could not get his backup to work, because he could not get it on the original lost card. And having recently purchased the garmin discoverer maps and already having the garmin topos i would have liked to put them on 1 card so i could use both, but this has proved impossible. You would not want to change SD cards in the field, if you dropped one you wouldnt find it again. Quote Link to comment
