Why Geocoin collectors?

Why would we have geocoin collectors. Doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of the game? Why would I pay $9 to $12 for a geocoin if some collector is going to grab it and keep it. We need to have collector coins without a tracking numbers and geocoins with tracking numbers. Then the collector should not grab those with numbers unless he plans to move them on there way. thats what tracking means to track something and watch it travel. I had thought about buying a few coins but now I don't think I will. I'll stick to travel bugs. Or do we have collectors for those to?

TRUE Geocoin Collectors (I am one.) do NOT "collect" someone elses' geocoin. We buy our geocoins, or trade for them, just like you would. We just don' send our collection out to travel and risk being picked up by a muggle or questionable "geocachers" who would steal geocoins. If a geocoin's activated and travelling, it belongs to the person who activated it. TRUE Geocoin Collectors know tis and would never steal an activated geocoin from a cache.

Ladyrich,

Geocoin collectors don't collect coins they find in caches. UNLESS, it is a special unactivated coin that is meant to be picked up (for example, mystery coins, Eartha's, FTF coins). Coin collectors are purchasing these coins with their own money. They are trading each other for coins to add to their collections. Some coiners are making their own coins out of glass, washers, china and pottery. Others are contacting mints and having their own coins made at their own expense. Many coiners release coins to travel, just like you do. If anything, you can trust a coiner to be careful with your released coins. We always look for "just the right cache" to leave your coins in... a cache that is popular and muggle free usually works  Please, don't be afraid to indulge in the hobby of geocoin collecting. You will meet many creative and generous people in this community.

what Chickahominy said!

Geocoin collecting (not geocoin stealing,) is a great hobby. I've been fortunate to be able to trade with and meet many wonderful (and in all honesty, some not so wonderful...but very few,) collectors during my short collecting time. Stick around the geocoin forum for a little while. TBs are great too, but they just aren't geocoins!

As some others have noted, there is a group of people who Collect Coins, but NOT the coins that are activated to travel. The people who "Collect" those are known as theives.

Simply the same way you bought coins you're thinking of parting with and set free to travel and enjoy many adventures others keep to oogle and fondle and maybe show off at events to exchange icons. Different strokes for different folks.

What is this rash of noobs who think that the only way to collect coins is to steal them? I mean if collectors are supposed to be getting their coins from caches where are the coin owners getting theirs from? And could it be possible that collectors get their coins the same way coin owners do??? Heavens to Betsy .... what a concept.

Unfortunatly, it does defeat the purpose...As far as I know, the Coin thing started with people releasing them in the wild, but so many got stolen that people just started keeping the ones they bought.

I think you are misunderstanding that Collectors do not get their collections from the coins they find in Caches. They buy, create, and trade for them.

Settle down folks, the OP has made a fair point.

I want to take this opportunity to formerly apologise to the 150 kids I mugged to create my yo-yo collection.

"No sir, please don't take my yo-yo"

"It's not your yo-yo anymore. Bwaa Ha Ha"

Edit : I hear a Candy collection is even easier to create.

Yuppers.

Every geocoin in my collection I own because I was either gifted with them or bought them. Period.

And I collect them and display them because I think they are beautiful. I see them as art and approachable art at that. The ones I buy resonate with me on some level: I connect with them and enjoy looking at them.

It's a fair question to ask and I think all the answers are excellent. However, I agree it's a bit funny that we get these posts every once in awhile asking why we steal to create a collection -- would we have our own section on the Groundspeak forum boards if we were all dedicated to the art of stealing other player's trackables?? Curious.

Yeah, my intent wasn't to flame the OP but the mind set that's shown itself so frequently here. It's great that newbies ask questions and no question is a a dumb question but why must one immediately assume that all the trading going on and collecting is by thieves? I mean it's pretty dumb to be so flagrant with one's wheeling and dealing in stolen property right on the same website to where coin owners activate their coins that are allegedly going missing. I'd love it if the real geocoin pirates would post their booty and hoards on the Forums so we can find 'em, round 'em up and .... well, it's nice to fantasize.

EDIT to add: Ladyrich many collectors are also coin owners who've lost many many coins to thievery or just careless cachers who place our shiny precious valuables in shoddy caches that get muggled with increasing frequency. Not only have we coughed up huge amounts of cash for our collections but also burned bundles of it by releasing coins that go missing. To be accused to being part of the problem we have suffered from is hard to take. :violin:

I never meant to imply that the collectors were stealing. It was something I didn't know about and I wanted to understand what it was all about. There's no need to be rude. I have now joined coincollecting.com I am interested.

I beg your pardon if I was rude as it was not my intent to accuse or flame you. But in your post you do imply and clearly state that your fear collectors are going to grab and keep your $9-$12 coin.

I did wonder about that. Thats why I ask the question. Which is why to title was "Why geocoin collectors.?"

We aren't trying to be rude. But the above sentence is a direct quote from your post and there really is no other way to read it but that you think collectors steal. I am sure there is the odd cacher out there that steals coins for their own treasure but the people that come here have a passion for geocoins and do not steal them. As other posters have said, they pay big dollars to feed this obsession in a lot of cases. And as Droo said, there are many of us that have coins out in the wild in addition to our collections.

It's ok to ask a question. As you can see, you have received some great answers from some understanding people that did not take offence to your question. But I think we are allowed to wonder why we get this question so often!

Glad to see you are interested in the geocoin world...it's easy to get sucked into the passion of it all once you see all the cool coins out there! Best of luck and keep the questions coming!

Actually, it's cachers who steal the coins... coin collectors don't have time to cache... therefore they are unable to steal the coins. There are also people who hoard travel bugs... but thing is to let it go and don't put something in a cache you wouldn't want stolen, cause once it goes into the wild, there are all kinds of ways a coin can get lost, stolen or muggled.

this comment is not meant to belittle or insult anyone here, it is just my own personal opinion.

the original post also seems to imply that collecting a "trackable item" that may not be "tracked" somehow does not make any sense, but i would ask, why do people collect stamps when they are meant to be used as postage? why do people collect coin currency when it is meant to be spent? why do people collect cars when they are meant to be used as transportation? or plates, or dolls, or comic books, or action figures? or anything else for that matter?! well, there are as many reasons as there are geocoins, but the bottom line is, its a fun hobby, and an interesting pasttime that people involved in this sport enjoy and appreciate. it may not make complete sense, i agree, but after you get the fever and you find a favorite geocoin you just fall in love with, it will make more sense to you. as crazy as it may seem!

I am a collector of many things. I have collected a lot of things since my early childhood. Some collections I still have, most I lost when I moved cross country. I just like collecting things that have special value to me, even if not any monetary value. And some of my collections are quite odd to most people. B)

That is so correct!!! Hey, Dave... are you a collector in something else except coins???

I am one of the crazy collectors! B) I collect coins, paper money (also known as banknotes or bills in USA), tokens, casino chips and tokens, medals, coupons that were used as a part of payment or to buy something (like food coupons), but they must have a face value on it, local currencies (the ones they started cming out the last years.... for example... Calgary dollars, Torondo dollars, Salt Spring island dollars, Berkshares...), Militaria things, phone cards, and my sister and my mother collect stamps!!! :( I also have 3 shares, 3 bonds, and some old greek loterry tickets.... a stamp that was used as money... some sea shells that were used as money (odd money, like the cawri sea shells).... It is a mess!!! :)

I aggree with Howlingmoon that some collections may be odd to others etc!

Well... the things we might do not like and we just throw away, someone else collects them and they are valuable collectables for him!!

when you buy a geo-coin, it is your choice to put it in a cache and activate it,, like you say somone may come along and steal your coin, but if any collector find that person,, watch out!!!! as we do not steal.

most of the coins you will find in caches will be owned by a geocoin collector, and it just happends that they let one go....it really does hurt the collectors when impling we stole the coins from caches , and your not alone for thinking this, as droo has put, we get this alot,, but also as you,,, those who think that, when they understand how we get our coins, by trading and buying them join our addiction and become collectors them selfs.

welcome to the madness!!! ;)

Let me bring your attention to one line in your original post... Which has already been pointed at when you said before that you weren't accusing anyone, by the way.

Why would I pay $9 to $12 for a geocoin if some collector is going to grab it and keep it.

All you have to do is stop responding to the posts and this thread will die away. By throwing a tantrum you just turn the drama up a notch.

Trackables are not swag, they should not have to wait to travel 'til they can be traded for other trackables. They should simply be placed in caches so they can continue travelling. Some cache owners who place "TB Hotels" put "rules" on those caches saying to trade one for one trackable but, they own the cache, not the trackables. The owner of the trackables want to see their trackables travelling, not being stuck in a "TB Hotel" 'cause someone doesn't have a trackable to get it out of jail and travelling again.
