Themed cache poll

Following a discussion in the Why Do People Suddenly Stop Caching thread on themed or specialist caches I thought I'd seek the opinions of the forum members for the order in which themed caches should be set.

I'd appreciate you listing in a 1, 2, 3 format the order you'd like to see the following set so that I can start work on which one to prioritise my time on.

Bikers Only: A hundred (or two) mile ride for bikers only. This cache will cover popular biker areas in one route ending in a popular biker spot.

Techie's Paradise: A short multi incorporating the use of WiFi, Bluetooth, internet, RFID etc. (compatible RFID reader available to borrow for those who wish to partake).

Signing The Cache: A virtual cache using sign language videos/images to give clues. A basic understanding of British Sign Language is necessary to complete the cache.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for your thoughts.

The Bikers Only cache would need questions answering that only bikers would know.

The route covers parking for bikes only.

Parts of the route are unsuitable for cars.

I've been told that I can't put a conditional clause on saying that photos of cachers on their bikes or in their leathers are required to complete the log.

Road bikes? Trail bikes? Are all the bike-only routes completely legal?

Don't underestimate the power of Google, a car parking spot, and legs

If you make it a bike-only cache, you might find more non-bikers taking up the challenge of defeating your rules than there are bikers completing it

Deejay,

Glad you're in favour of the bike themed cache.

Of course non-bikers are welcome to do the cache. Cyclists are welcome too.

The Royles,

Until I saw the feedback from the Why do cachers suddenly stop thread the whole thing was nothing more than hypothetical banter between friends. Since people have shown interest in them I'm thinking about putting at least one of them in to effect. I don't personally have a preference over them. As a hard of hearing techie mad bike fan, they all involve my interests.

In that case:

1. Signing The Cache: Good way to promote awareness

2. Techie's Paradise: All cachers are techies really

3. Bikers Only: not a biker so this comes last for me

Yes, they're completely legal.

I've looked at other caches and found that conditions have been placed on logging some caches, usually answering a question or having a photo taken. The same would be put in place for the Bikers Only cache.

Great. Thanks.

If the Signing The Cache wins out I'll have to get some images prepared. I think I'll opt out of the video for the people using mobile phones, too many compatibility issues.

Unfortunately (or not...) Alternative Logging Requirements (ALR's) that required you to meet certain conditions to log a cache - such as answering a question or having a photo taken - are no longer allowed.

Would never work... I think caches, like events, have to be open to all to do - ie if sign the log, you can log it...

Plus I drink in a bikers' pub...I have contacts...... mwahahahaha....

I think they have to be open to all that do them ..... ???????

Climbing caches aren't very wheelchair friendly - but still allowed.

Events on boats don't cater for people who get seasick - but there's no requirement (AFAIK) to have a parallel event on dry land

Fair enough. As far as I can tell those are GSP's rules though. There are so many caching sites out there that the option of posting it elsewhere is not ruled out.

Additional Logging Requirements

.... A virtual cache using sign language ...

I presume you mean Puzzle rather than Virtual.

Sounds a bit like this one

Mark

Mark that is absolutely brilliant. If it wasn't 270 miles from home then I'd be out there straight away.

I love that damsk has pictures of the British Sign alphabet (many Makaton signs are the same as BSL).

Personally I'm looking to do a very similar thing but it would be a little more complex. Where traditional multis will give you clues to the next coordinates, this would give you clues to where you can decipher the next web address, the next coordinates would be signed on that web page.

Dare I suggest you're asking your questions in the wrong forum then?:grin:

In the time it's taken me to type the previous response (two year old jumping all over me) there have been a few replies.

I wasn't going to mention it but the biker cache was the idea of a friend of mine. It was going to be dedicated to the memory of a friend who lost his life after a car driver ran him off the road, claiming "he didn't see him".

With insurance companies publishing statistics showing 83% of bike related accidents are not at the fault of bad weather, adverse conditions, excess speed etc., white van man, but exclusively car drivers I thought it would be a nice way to remember him but as many of you have said - there will always be someone who will ignore the title and instructions and try to do it in a car.

I thought that the ALR would be a good way to keep this one just for bikers but clearly this wouldn't happen so I've chosen to commemorate our friend another way.

First and second preferences for signing / techie only from now on.

Thanks.

I'd go for a puzzle based on signing. Techy one just seems like it'd too much hassle.

As for a biker one - why is there a problem with non-bikers doing it anyway? Surely by setting it, you'd be making motorists aware of bikers. We drive past Devil's bridge a lot, and along the A65 I always try to be aware of bikers - as a pushbike rider I do appreciate some of the issues. But why do so many of the insist on riding round right-hand bends with their wheels on the left, but leaning with their head on the wrong side of the road at about headlight height? :? But I guess that's for another forum!

I do like the idea of a Biker cache, but open to all - maybe set a quizz element that means you need to at least understand some of the stuff bikers have to put up with?

Theres only one question I can think of that only bikers would know the correct answer to :

You're riding like a nutcase and hit a car head on whilst overtaking round a blind bend whose fault is it?

a) The car driver

 The car driver

or

c) The car driver

The signing one is easy if you have a basic knowledge of sign. If you have the CACDP's Stage I or above then you'll be able to understand the potential instructions without an issue, but not many people would know how to sign, hence the survey.

As for the techie cache, you'd need something with Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS (obviously), and a USB port if you wanted to borrow an RFID reader. For the most part a laptop will have the above.

If I did go ahead with this I'd be willing to lend a reader to those who wished to take part on the understanding that it was returned immediately afterwards. I'd post the web address of my home automation server to show whether the reader was available for use or already in use at any given time.

At this point there's still no absolute guarantee I'll be posting any of the above, I'm just curious to see which one would be preferred.
