Getting PQs without email question

1) Other than the DeLorme PN series and Apple iPhones -- are there any devices that can download Geocaching Pocket Queries DIRECTLY from GC.com, instead of retrieving them through email first?

2) Is there an option anywhere on the GC.com site to completely disable the emailing of PQ so users of those devices can simply pull them down when needed?

1. No. I don't think so.

2. No. Not currently.

I believe that OpionNate posted some time ago that they are working on the site upgrades that would allow the Pocket Queries to be downloaded directly and that emailed PQs might eventually be eliminated.

I would be bummed if the email option were taken out completely unless other third party tools were allowed to download direct from GC. In this, I mean tools like GSAK. I use this to plan my hikes off line.

I would be in favor of an opt out of email or even an opt in email option.

Not that I have a stake or a say in it, but do you mind me asking why you would still prefer an email option as opposed to a direct download of the GPX file to your computer from the Geocaching.com website?

Love your correction line, BTW.

If GSAK doesn't gain the API to direct load the PQs, I'm going to find myself falling behind on planning scenarios for my hikes. I don't always direct load into the GPS. I export filtered GPX files from GSAK to Topo to decide where to go on a given trail.

I wouldn't mind skipping the email step allowing I could directly download to GSAK. Like others I use GSAK to fine tune PQs prior to submitting them to my device.

Right. I understand the want/need/desire to load the GPX into GSAK for filtering.

I guess the question I'm asking is if you can download the PQ GPX directly from the website on your computer and then open it in GSAK (or whatever program you wish), wouldn't that be a better option than waiting for an email.

Or am I missing part of the process.

Yes, that would be better. And if you're not going to be "fine tuning" it in GSAK or other apps, sending DIRECTLY to the GPSR is the best.

Automation. Your suggestion implies there is another program I'm going to have to use to downlaod the GPX files. GSAK is a one step process to pull the PQs from my email account specifically set up to receive the PQs, extract the data then proces it.

Unless the PULL method is built-in, anything else is intermediary and cumbersome which means more steps to do the same thing.

Totem Lake makes a very good point.

Currently GSAK does everything. I click one Macro button and GSAK signs into email account, pulls down the PQ's, loads them into GSAK database and deletes the emails and associated files. Nothing could be easier.

On the download topic, currently the iPhone application has the ability to download any PQ that has been ran in the last week. To clarify, it downloads the PQ content as of when you originally ran the PQ. It does not generate an up to date set of data. It i very slick and is a welcome addition to email but not a replacement for email.

I would hope we would have both options available.

Ok. That makes sense. I don't load my PQs into GSAK that way. I just open them manually.

I knew there must be a step that I was missing in your procedure. So, your explanation makes sense. Thanks for enlightening me.

It will be interesting to see what happens.
