Downloading to GPS

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a new GPS and one thing I want to do is download directly from Geocaching.com to the GPS and have a couple of questions.

1. Do I have to be a premium member to do this? :anibad:

2. What GPSs can do this? Am I limited to Magellan Triton and Garmin Colorado?

3. What information is downloaded? I assume the coordinates and the GC number. What about the description and hints? Is anything else downloaded?

Thanks,

CachingGrandpa

Im not an expert but....

Yes you need a premium membership (well worth the money)

I believe the Colorado will work I don't think the Triton will

Waypoint, name, ID Description, hint, and recent logs ( at least I get that on my Oregon)

I'm not an expert either but according to this www site:

GPS Devices Supporting GPX files

"Some devices support and read Geocaching GPX files directly, like the Magellan Triton and Garmin Colorado."

Further, I'm quite certain that the Garmin Oregon has that capability and at least one Delorme and a few other Garmins. Someone surely has a list available. ;-)

Are you talking about clicking the "Send to GPS" button on the cache page? Or are you talking about downloading a whole PQ or list of caches at once? If you mean the first one, I'm a basic member and I can do that. I have a Garmin etrex legend. It sends the cache name, GC number, and coordinates.

Doesn't send the hint? I was under the impression that the send to gps click sent gpx info and that the gpx info would also contain the hint.

I have a Magellan Triton 300. I cannot take advantage of the "Download to GPS" function. I have to download the cache to VantagePoint then load them to the Triton from VantagePoint.

The other item is that if I use the .loc file available to free members, clicking on the information tab will lock the unit up and cause a reboot. I have to download all items in the GPX format (available to premium members only).

The hitch is that we can only download one GPX file at a time, but a mass download defaults to the .loc filetype.

Not with the eTrex. You would need to have an Oregon or a Colorado (and maybe one of the paperless DeLorme models) to get the hint with the "Send to GPS" button. The eTrex doesn't support it from the cache page.

And of course, basic members can only get the LOC files.

Triton? :anibad:

Well, the Triton can't use the "Send to GPS" button at all because Magellan hasn't not created a plug-in that would allow data to be sent from a webpage to their GPS units.

Thank you. I thought that I has seen in these forums that the Triton was 'Send to GPS' capable.

Must have been somewhere else.

I have been downloading caches into my gps long before i became a premium member. Garmins and Delormes can download straight from the cache page. My Magellan i have to use something along the lines of mapsend to download them. But i only get gc on my particular garmin but the wifes magellan gets name of cache

I downloaded the Gamin plug in for the send to phone feature. I have a Lowrance Out&Back and the application will send the .gpx file to my device fine I just have to change the root name on my gps because the Garmin application creates its own file name of "Garmin" so the gps doesn't know where to look with out the change in name. I actually like the free account feature with the .loc file. It sends one file to my device without having to click on each cache and downloading them individually. I'm just getting back into the game myself and decided to pay so I could get the .gpx files and am disappointed that I can't download multiple .gpx files in one go. If someone knows of a good way to download a hell of a lot of caches at once I would like to know how.
