I have a new Oregon 500t and need to get it set up and ready to go before Saturday. We got this a couple of weeks ago but hubby was diagnosed with cancer and things have been crazy ever since. He had his first chemotherapy today and the doctor gave the okay for us to go on our planned vacation (we were supposed to leave today but will now leave on Saturday, providing he still feels alright). Now I'm scampering to get the 500t ready and loaded with CityNav and some caches so we can enjoy a few easy caches on our trip.

I went to Garmin's website and tried to register the new unit but when downloaded the info and was then asked to disconnect the unit from the computer and wait for the unit to turn back on and return to the main screen I did that but the unit never came back on????!!!! There was a strong warning not to "manipulate" the unit or it may be harmful to it so I don't know what to do now. I'm in such a crunch. I hope someone can help me out with this asap. Thanks so much! I love to cache on our vacations and would hate not to be able to do a few at least. Rita

I mean 550t of course...my brain is fried!

I got it registered but would like to get the appropriate map. I know it's pre-loaded with maps but heard that City Nav would be what i should get. Is that correct? I don't see that listing on the Garmin site, can someone help me out with that? Thanks

I have CN loaded on my Colorado and Oregon 550 and found it really helpful for turn by turn directions. However, using CN to find a cache could be another story. For example, if a cache is in a park that backs to someones home CN will try to take you down their street instead of to the park. You could, of course, just set your destination to the park. I can't compare it using the Oregon to a Nuvi which has voice commands, but I can say that the Oregon with CN works for me. The bottom line is that if you want turn by turn directions then get the appropriate CN. If you are traveling in North America then get CN North America and load it through Map Source. However, if you are jstrictly caching with the Oregon then I don't see why you would need CN.

Thanks for your input...after looking at CN it's what I thought about it as well. We will be using it just for caching so will skip that. Can't figure out why the other cacher recommended it and said it was for out of the way places and back roading. Oh well, thanks again.

It can be helpful for out of the way places. In Wyoming we ended up on a road that was on the CN, but wasn't quite what I thought a road would be. We couldn't believe it showed up on the CN. Now, without the CN we wouldn't have seen the road, as the maps that come with the Oregon will only have major streets and highways.

Have a great trip!

I hope the crazines settles down for all of you.
