New to all this and just got my first GPS. I went with the eTrex Legend H. I may not have researched enough... Does the basis map only show main roads? How do I get this thing to show more streets. Can anyone give me hints in using this thing??? Oh yea, was able to get my first find today!!! after about 3 hours of trying to figure out my GPS...LOL... Any help would be great. Thanks......

The preloaded base map is a very basic map that only shows main road.

In order to get detailed maps of roads, you would need to load a street map.

You can purchase City Navigator from Garmin, but since that unit has a limited amount of memory space for maps and doesn't autoroute, you should look at these free maps.

As to the use of the unit, have you read the user manual? What problems are you having?

You might also want to look through the GPS and Technology Forum section for more GPS information.

Without a doubt you will be better off with the freeware maps available in the link that Moto Mama provided.

The Ibycus USA maps would be fine for your unit. You will want to get Mapsource installed and load the Ibycus maps using Mapsource to your device by selecting a mapset that will fit on your device since it has limited memory.

Once you get the hang of the interface and use of the GPSr you'll be good to go.

Keep in mind that no maps at all are necessary for Geocaching. Makes it a bit easier but not necessary.

Sounds like you may have expected the unit to guide you down the streets to the location - sorry that unit is not capable of that.

Actually you are better off getting Garmin's Mapsource Topo. City Navigator is a memory hog if you live in a populated area and the maps on GPSfiledepot are nice, but from what I've experienced they take up a lot of memory too. You won't get much map coverage with them because the Legend H has only 24 megs of map memory. Mapsource Topo should give you coverage for most of your state at least. You'd be lucky to get a county using the free maps or City Navigator.
