AfroGunsou Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Okay, I'm new to Geocaching and I'm looking for a GPS that is easy to use. I don't really know what to tell you I'm looking for since I don't really know anything about GPSes. Since I don't know whether I'll make Geocaching a long-time hobby, I'm not looking to spend alot of money. But if I do make it a long-time hobby, I'd like this GPS to last me for a good while. From reading around I've found that that means I'd probably want USB capabilities for downloading caches so... that, I guess. Sorry if my words are awkward sounding you'll have to forgive me, I'M JUST A n00b! Thanks in advance! Quote
+SkellyCA Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 1. What is your budget? 2. What else will it be used for? Hiking, Driving, Boating, something else? Quote
jmundinger Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I would suggest getting a Garmin Venture HC. You won't be out a lot of money if you decide that caching is not for you. You will get a unit with most of the functionality of the high end units - just not all of the bells and whistles. And, if you later decide to upgrade, you'll still have a quality backup unit. The Venture HC comes with a USB cable and I agree with you that feature is an essential, not just for caching but for a variety of other applications. Quote
+Rockin Roddy Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Look into the DeLorme PN-20 or PN-30. The PN-20 is the little brother to the 30, is a bit slower on redraws, but is a good unit for the price (around $140...check here PN-20 on amazon.com) Or, the PN-30 is here PN-30 on amazon.com Both of these units are great for caching and other outdoor fun, both are easy to use, can hook up to the computer and even use the send to feature on GC.com which means you can have the info sent to your unit with the simple click of a button. ALL info is included and these are both completely paperless meaning you can also upload field notes from the unit to your computer for easy logging of your found caches! Both units will auto-route, the PN-20 is a bit slower though. Both units come complete with maps and are ready to go out of the box (add batteries of course). I'd recommend the PN-30 if it's in your budget. If you find you don't like the fun of caching, you'll be able to re-sell the unit for a minimal loss! OR, you can return it within 30 days for a full refund! Quote

AfroGunsou Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 OKay, more soecific information for ya'll now: My budget is about $150-$200 My mom also wants to use it for trips and stuff so it's gotta also be a turn-by-turn, car type GPS I suppose Hope this will help. Thanks again. Quote
+Redwoods Mtn Biker Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 At that price, I'd suggest deciding which you want, a geocaching handheld OR an auto unit. There are too many compromises trying to do both with one unit, even when you spend much more. Quote

A yellow etrex H and a cheap car nav would work. Or, you might go for a car nav and a used unit, check ebay. Quote
+Team CowboyPapa Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Unfortunately, one size does not fit all. In addition to a DeLorme PN-40 for geocaching and other outdoor activities, I am fortunate enough to also have an OEM, in-dash GPS/NAV unit in my Jeep with turn-by-turn voice guidance. Believe me, they are two different devices with very little functional overlap. Quote
