Looking for a caching trail near Helsinki

Recommended Posts

Greetings to you all. :P

We are coming to Finland this coming weekend to find some caches (it's a required country) and we are staying in Helsinki.

Our plans are that we will hunt down some caches in Helsinki city, take a return ferry to Tallinn, Estonia (also a required country) and a day trip to Turku, but we would also like to go to the countryside, however, we are not having any luck finding where we can catch a train to the countryside then take a walk (4 hours or so) around a lake and forests finding loads of caches in the process - can anyone give us some suggestions, thank-you.

There are no such caching trails in Finland as you have e.g. along canals in Britain - a cache every 200 yards.

You can take bus 345 from Helsinki railway station to Luukki outdoor recreation area. Plenty of caches there. Timetable:

A central cache in Luukki:

An other option is to go to Nuuksio National Park, which requires using train + bus combination. Going there by bus 85 and returning by 28 is a good option.

Thank you, I shall study all these options.

I’m surprised that caching trails haven’t caught on in Finland – you Finns are fanatic cachers than us Brits! ;)

..oh, another question if we go out to the countryside - are we likely to be eaten alive by mosquitoes?! ;)

Perhaps. Sometimes there's mosquitoes aplenty, sometimes only a few. It's best to buy a product called OFF! It's a little spray bottle and prevents mosquitoes. In sommer I have a bottle in my geocaching bag and it's proved to be a good practice some five times this summer (that means mostly it is not needed but when you need it you really really need it

Mosquito season is mostly over. If weather turns a bit warmer than what it has been lately, then you'll probably encounter some mosquitoes. But in southern Finland and at this time of the year you won't be eaten alive.

The deer ked or deer fly (Lipoptena cervi) should be mentioned here. I think this is even more annoying creature in this time of year. Even OFF can't do much about these bugs. These could bite but the main annoyance in is the inconvenience and unpleasantness of removing keds from hair and clothes. These are mostly around sometimes mid august - till end of september.

If our small animals are too much.. You might want to visit some smaller town around Helsinki with reasonable amount of geocaches in walkable distances. I would then suggest to visit city of Porvoo. About 50 km north east from Helsinki. Busses leave something like every 30 minutes from Helsinki and it takes about hour to get there.

We had a great time in Finland (and Estonia) over the weekend bagging caches in Helsinki and Turku city centres.

The weather was great and not one mosquito was seen.

The best find was 0km Helsinki, what a bold cache and a popular one too!

Happy caching to all you Finns!
