I just started getting into geocaching with my wife. Initially we were just using our iphones with the app from Geocaching.com. It was fine until we ran into a problem when one cache gave us instructions to head on a bearing of x true for a distance of x meters. We realized to get the most out of of geocaching we would have to buy a proper gps.

Today we bought the Venture HC. Has been working great! However I have 2 questions.

1) I'm still unsure of how to input a bearing into the GPS. I can go to the map and move to curser in a general direction that I want to go and create a waypoint, but I'm unsure of how to input an accurate bearing.

2) We were completely unaware that the gps came with absolutely no streets etc. This means that we still seem to be finding ourselves using our iphone to get to the right area of the cache, and then end up using the venture for the accurate coordinates. We would buy the maps from Garmin, but when we checked out the maps they can provide, they still only give about 1/2 the amount of road detail as the iphone can give. Do I have other options here?

Thanks for any feedback you can provide!

1. If you mean how to create a waypoint to navigate to, just mark your current location and then edit the coordinates.

2. City Navigator maps should have similar coverage to your iPhone, but you may run up against memory issues. You might want to check out some of the free maps at http://gpsfiledepot.com, especially http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/19/.

On #1 ... are you trying to "project" a waypoint a specified distanced @ a specified bearing from another waypoint? Most GPS units have a function that's usually labelled "Project Waypoint".
