TB & GC statistics for 12 August 2011:

There are 980 TBs and GCs in 662 of the 6405 active South African caches.

The trend over the last 2 years has been one additional trackable in circulation every 5.8 days, and one more cache with trackables every 21 days.

The percentage of South African caches carrying trackables decreased from 18.6% two years ago to 10.3% today. I think there are two reasons for this - firstly the number of new caches grew much faster than the number of trackables in circulation, and secondly, almost half of all the new caches since then have been micros, which usually can not accommodate trackables.

There are 4 caches with more than 10 trackables:

GC1RN78 - Ki-Deo - TB's Place To Call Home!: 29 trackables

GC251A0 - Rosenheim 43 TB Hotel: 17 trackables

GC1GZ0K - Little Netherlands TB Hotel: 16 trackables

OK everyone - I know how Danie loves his statistics AND loves a challenge. I have a thought that might produce some interesting figures. Many of us have trackables in circulation and all of us who have some in circulation have had some disappear. What would be interesting is to see what the "loss ratio" or "survival ratio" is for trackables. Is there a way of doing that or would each cacher have to submit there trackable figures - survivors vs MIA's - manually for Danie to calculate.

Looking forward to some ideas / suggestions / comments.

There are a number of problems to calculate this: The moment a trackable leaves Africa, I lose track of it. I'll need to know where all trackables are for the whole world, which is impractical, with the limitation of 5 PQs per day. The second problem is when is a trackable really lost? Some cachers keep them for months, and others are logged in the wrong caches. Yet another problem is that trackables are removed (stolen, or not logged) but are still shown as being in a cache. (The owner of the trackable, as well as the cache owner, can easily correct this, but it is often not done.)

I thought there would be problems getting the data. The only way would be to do it manually based on the feedback of cachers who provide info.

Any chance of reporting:

1) Similar stats for all of Africa? I assume SA have the vast amjority of trackables - event though we have about 86% of the caches - I would imagine well over 95% of the Travellers?

2) Any idea on the total number of travellers ever in sa? - or perhaps total number of tb visits (multiple visits and dips included)

It should be easy to do the same for the whole of Africa - I did not realise there was any interest. I'll add it during the next round (probably tomorrow).

Do you mean the total number of GCs and TBs over all time? I kept weekly snapshots of everything in Africa from about August 2009. I guess one could extract a master list of all the trackables in Africa since that time, but it will be a lengthy manual process. I'll think about it...

If it is too lengthy - do not worry - if it is a tickle of the keyboard with your macro - then by all means.

Just for interest to see how many TB visist there have been in SA over time. And if TBs still move as often or not.

Speaking of TB stats, I've been tracking those that have visited my hotel - GC2CG7X - Hiddingh Security TB Hotel http://coord.info/GC2CG7X

To do this, I've had to manually keep a spreadsheet of visitors, when they logged in and out. I've noticed a few double visits, but as these don't get double listed in the 'all past trackables' list, i'm not sure how to find these. Anyway, I thought readers of this thread might enjoy these graphs. Also, any suggestions as to how to do this easier, or other things you like to see for the stats of a given hotel. Feedback very welcome.

as of 31 Jan 2012: 323 Visits for 317 unique trackables. (not including geokrets, I haven't been tracking these)

I would never have imagined over 550 TBs in the rest of Africa!

Yes, it is surprising - 49% of the caches in the rest of Africa contain trackables, vs. 9% for South Africa.

Very odd - I have found very few caches in Africa with TBs in them. A few select ones - many dips I notice - but not many visitors. Well that was my perception anyhow.

Is it possible that many of the African caches that have TBs indicated as being there in fact don't have any in them? My experience in "remote" areas has shown this to be the case quite often. I was in Bali 2 weeks ago and 2 caches had in excess of 10 trachables listed in each of them. The one cache had 2 and then other - with 14 listed - had none! i had similar experiences in remote caches in the Spanish and French Pyrenees as well.

The majority of the African caches containing trakabkes will more than likely be in Morrocco which has huge traffic from Europe and perhaps has similar stats to Bali? Don't know. Just posing the question.

The breakdown for Africa is as follows:

Africa: 1567 trackables in 968 caches out of 8067 (12.0%)

South Africa: 1001 trackables in 656 caches out of 6919 (9.5%)

Rest of Africa: 566 trackables in 312 caches out of 1148 (27.2%, sorry - I made a mistake yesterday)

Egypt: 137 trackables in 61 caches out of 182 (33.5%)

Namibia: 86 trackables in 52 caches out of 172 (30.2%)

Morocco: 42 trackables in 21 caches out of 74 (28.4%)

Reunion: 28 trackables in 20 caches out of 50 (40.0%)

Kenya: 26 trackables in 13 caches out of 49 (26.5%)

Mauritius: 23 trackables in 12 caches out of 43 (27.9%)

There are more African countries with trackables, but far fewer than the above.

I also suspect that quite a number of these trackables are missing, but never removed from the cache inventories. This is a problem even in South Africa.

Wow - Reunion has a high percentage. It is also a very remote location but has more caches than Kenya!

Very odd - they both have 50 caches active currently in total - I guess Reunioon (which is technically part of France) - has a lot of EU (French) cachers visiting for official business and tourism reasons?

This certainly is possible - I know one or two of the Egyptian caches have some "retired" TBs from elsewhere placed in them - perhaps the reviewers need to look at this (?) not soure of whther thjis is allowed - e.g. a virtual in Cairo.

But some like Karen's House in Nairobi often do contain a good few and keep a good healthy turnover of TBs from tourists.
