I haven't made one yet. I was de-motivated by the cold reception my Windows Vista geocoin idea received.

<grin> Sometimes coin design is like submitting writing to publishers. You end up with a big stack of rejection notices. You just gotta keep at it. : )

Thanks for the encouragement. I am sure the Mariah Carey 2009 (Still annoying in eight octaves) geocoin will do much better. The AE has glitter !

Sweet! I'll take 10! Glitter! ;):rolleyes::D

Hey cachers I have been watching this thread for a bit...

I like the coin's design wish I could see its back though.....

If I may ask waht is the difference between a log entry of;

Left porsche TB, SL, Took Purple People Eater TB.

or

TNLNSL

or

Took Fire-Eater Geocoin, left Eat, Stay, Play Token...

Does not seem all that bad to me.....

Mybe I am missing something.

Got the comerical aspect, but at least they are promoting caching....

and they seem to understand the sport, unlike many coin Dealers just looking for our $'s.

I am still on the fence.

My Tokens came today :P

They are not bad.....

I will put some in my own caches as well....

This looks to be pretty fun after all.

My Tokens came today :)

Whatever happened to following the rules? They clearly state You MUST be 18 to participate. They aren't a suggestion or for negotiation. Personally after having dealt with some minor's in coin situations, I can understand and fully agree I would not like to deal with minors in these things. It's their right and they were very clear about it. But it looks like you are playing by your own rules.

Do parents just let their kids run a muck anymore or what? Don't they wonder when a package shows up in the mail where it came from and ask questions? If after all that wouldn't they check it out and see their kid was getting involved into something he wasn't even old enough to be in and correct the situation. I would guess some would cover for their kids and think this is a very benign thing and just lie for the kid and give them their coin, but what would that be teaching the kid? The ends justify the means to some I guess.

Hello pghlooking,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, however we were made aware of this late yesterday, after returning home from caching I had an e-mail from a fellow cacher letting me know on the age restriction I missed, I thought this was quite a nice way to let us know and this method definitely avoided the needless shaming and public humiliation of an eager young cacher.

As to your point let me first start by letting you know how we became aware of EatStayPlay was through finding a token in a cache, this was a intriguing proposition to “ Get a Free Geocoin” to an eager young cacher.

Fredhead asked me if he could sign onto the website and see what it was all about I agreed, and we did he came back more excited than when he left to visit the site, at his insistence I re-visited EatStayPlay and liked their site and what they offer as I travel a bit and when I go West I will use their service.

So I agreed to let him participate, the missing of the age restriction was not intentional I just missed it, again I missed it not Fredhead, nor was this malicious , or meant to circumvent the rules, When the tokens arrived we read the instructions and identified caches that met the requirements, and set out to find some caches and place some tokens. There is no information on age restrictions in this information.

Fredhead is so conscientious that even when we found a cache that had 2 tokens in it already he did not add any additional so as not to swamp the cache as per the instructions, funny we found a cache later in the day with 11 tokens, seems that some adults need to read a bit more in depth.

So again back to your point what will be done to correct this since my oversight was only discovered after Fredhead placed 15 tokens, I am contacting EatStayPlay to inform them of the mistake. My suggestion is to allow either myself or Fredhead’s Mother to complete putting out the tokens, or at least oversee the putting out of the tokens, as we agreed to do this and want to keep our word, EatStayPlay has invested their monies to manufacturer the tokens, and ship them to us, we should honor our arrangement. This I think is a good lesson, admitting a mistake, making it right and seeing through what you agreed to do. I am sure you agree do you not?

If EatStayPlay decides not to allow the participation of Fredhead or the transfer of his duties to another I will gift my coin to him, again teaching him the lesson that since I made a mistake I need to make it right not only to EatStayPaly but to my Son.

I would also encourage you to contact EatStayPlay and make sure that I indeed do live up to my word and contact them, for resolution, if they feel it necessary to address you with an answer or post here then you will know the outcome.

I would think that a e-mail, pm, etc.. would be much more effective way of communicating and defiantly would make it look like you were less conferential than you appear from this posting and many of your others. I am sure this is a misconception but if you only jump others HMMMMM.

P.S. This will be our last post on this subject here as we want to avoid the needless Hijacking of a thread, such as happened to the Sea Shepherd Fundraiser Geocoin!

I have no interest in contacting them. That's between you and them.

Seemed a pretty effective way of broaching the subject that was on topic. He posted here and I made an observation was all.

I have no need to contact you via PM. Anything that needs to be said about the coin or the likes are very relevant to these discussion boards. If you don't like it then maybe a better monitoring of who is posting what should be enforced at home, but that's your choice.

As for how confrontational I may appear, Do you really think I haven't been told that or worse before? Some people don't like the person who speaks up and doesn't fill their post with a bunch on nonsensical fluff just to appear nicey. I don't play that game and could care less if someone thinks I can be abrasive. I mean you would use sandpaper to whittle something down and get to the middle before you would use a cotton ball wouldn't you?

Maybe you should work on teaching how to post at home before trying to instruct me first. I mean it's not like I am trying to teach you how to place a cache properly so I don't think this is your place.

P.S. This will be our last post on this subject here as we want to avoid the needless Hijacking of a thread, such as happened to the Sea Shepherd Fundraiser Geocoin!

Psst. My point was on topic so it's not a hijacking. Now as far as your attempt at a shot at me about discussion the merit of another coin, it fell flat. Since your reference has no place in this thread, you are breaking 2 rules. But then again, that isn't new territory for you in the caching world.

Got my tokens yesterday...actually very nice as everyone has stated. Durable, will hold up very well if they travel from cache to cache. Going to go put some out today!

bad cell pic...sorry

Finally got out to put them all out today and now awaiting the geocoin!

I wanted to take a quick moment to address the under-18 issue that's been floating around. However, I don't think that THIS is really an appropriate place for a discussion, so I've started a different thread about it.

I set the minimum age of 18 for a couple of reasons:

1. I didn't want parents to be mad at me for sending packages to their children without their knowing and/or permission.

2. It seems that 18 is the standard minimum age for a lot of contests/promotions.

I would love to hear other people's thoughts about this all. But, like I said, this is NOT the appropriate place for this discussion. You can find my thread about it at

http://eatstayplay-forum.com/index.php?topic=37.0

I respectfully ask that we do NOT debate this issue here. I just wanted to respond that I do have thoughts about it and would love to hear opinions. Just NOT in this thread.

BTW: The coins will be mailed tomorrow for those of you who JUST earned them. I think I'm now caught up. By all means, let me know if I missed you!

I found one of the advertising coins yesterday in a cache. I was not even going to pick it up, but I thought this is not allowed and took it to come to the forums to check it out. After searching I found this forum. I also visited the advertisers website. All I can say is I am putting it in the trash. If I happen to find them in my sad two little caches I will take them out and trash them. I can't bring myself to trash someone's trackable, so if you have one of their trackable coins I won't pick it up, but I won't trash it either <_<

Can't say I was not tempted to get a free trackable after checking it out, but I feel it is not good for caching and I would not like to see it expand.

Maybe the advertiser might sponsor events and give out swag there, but not put it in caches.

My 2 cents.

Congratulations grimp, you have won my Secret CITO Cointest.

Please PM me your address and I will mail you a free, trackable, unactivated, genuine, geocoin. Keep it, trade it, sell it, whatever you like.

Cointest over (sorry folks, only 1 coin)

A quick way to find out how many geocoins are out there already would be to, "Search for a Trackable Item by Name" using the following Name: EatStayPlay Geocoin.

I just ran the search and came up with 37 activated EatStayPlay Geocoins, so far. :)

Thought I'd add: The advertising aspect of this promotion does seem quite a bit out of synch with the overall spirit of geocaching, especially with the spreading of tokens, but there has been a precedent established for promotional geocoins, for example: the Garmin Grand Opening Geocoin.

I think what people find a little distasteful is the tokens being spread out to promote the site, without prior approval from Groundspeak. All the other promotional items, Unite For Diabetes, Jeep TBs, Garmin, etc.... were done in cooperation with Groundspeak. eatstayplay had design approval for their geocoin, but did not get approval for the promotion.

I have been out of Geocaching for years, but here is my two cents. The spreading of these tokens, and the requirement of mentioning ESP in the logs is against the rules. I think Groundspeak needs to take action. Freeze these coins so they can't be tracked. Then have ESP work with Groundspeak to come up with an acceptable way of using them.

Happy to back to GCing, but sad to see it turning into the commercialism that I have to live with everyday already.

I wanted to thank you for all your great comments about this!

I'll take some time to explain to answer some of your questions:

First off, yes, you get to keep the geocoin. We'd LOVE for you to circulate it, but if you don't want to, that's your decision. You get to name it and give it a mission.

USA only: Well, we’re only offering website information about the USA so it doesn’t make sense to extend it to other countries. I know that geocaching is a world-wide activity.

As for putting out 50 tokens into an area, we thought that that would be about 10 caches. Not at ALL enough to saturate all the caches in a given area. And, so far, I haven't had any requests from cachers that even live in the same CITY so I don't think it'd be too much.

The design: I’m sorry that some of you don’t like it! I do. If you don’t like them, then by all means, don’t participate.

EatStayPlay.com promotes geocaching as a featured activity on our website in the hope to introduce others to this activity. We’ve redesigned our website with GPS coordinates on a lot of our pages to make it easier for people to find geocaches.

Our ‘What is Geocaching?’ page on our website is actually one of our most popular pages – like top 5. Our users ARE interested in geocaching and are getting started with this activity.

We love the fact that geocaching is so family friendly, positive, and supportive of the environment. I think that encouraging people to pick up trash when they are out and about is FANTASTIC and something I’ve been doing for years. I also love that everyone is welcomed with open arms to geocaching and they know that other cachers will be supportive.

Are we commercial? Well, we ARE a business. We sell advertising. We give away free information. The goal is always to promote outdoor adventures and family fun.

Please step up and do the right thing. Stop this program for now, and work out a better method with Groundspeak. Just because they don't have "Forum police" doesn't mean you should abuse the game.

Joe,

ESP did have design permission from Groundspeak for their trackable geocoin. It's the tokens they are dropping into caches, and asking people to mention the website, that was done without asking. You, as a cacher, don't have to mention it and don't have to move them. the tokens and the geocoins are two different things.

Merry Christmas to all! :D

WOW! I see the thing with the tokens and the coin is still on! Oh!

As I saw in a photo.... there are tokens in 4 different colors?

Well... since I can not participate and win a coin (I am not in USA).... can at least get a series (one token of all the colors) to keep them??? Since I am a crazy collector... and I collect coins, banknotes, tokens, medals..... :D

I have to thank you for even that you posted this!!! It is very kind of you but please my friend...do not do it!

If you and your brother kept one for your collection or just to have it as a signature item, please keep them! If anyone finds in a cache, instead of throw it or what ever else.... :D

Since you kept one for you and one for your brother, they are nice tokens! I wouldn't like to let you without them just to make my collection a little richer!!!

 I am not collecting everything... But... :D:D:D

I do not have huge collections.... my best collection is the coins and banknotes! the others are tiny or small!

My 11 year old son found five of these tokens in one cache the other day. He likes to collect tokens and such so he traded for it. As we were walking back to the car, he looked more closely at it, and found it to be "quite dumb" and said it wasn't even worth trading for. I see this gimmic as nothing more than circumventing the commercial rules. Needless to say, the token promptly went into the trash. I will not support this circumventing type behaviour I find this coin to be promoting.

Sorry for asking... but.. the one who started all this and made the tokens and the coins, has a geocaching account with the name you can also see in the tokens, right? (I haven't seen the tokens from close... yet!) The tokens are in caches... so why these tokens are not considered to be a kind of signature item of the player?

A signature item is not only been droped by the maker when he visits a cache! Someone else can drop it too! I have droped pathtags, wooden nickels... that were not mine!! So.. what's the difference??? :)

East play is a business too and I believe the cachers name was created with that in mind.

To me it is a commercial and that is all. Not that I see anything wrong with their business, just advertising in geocaches.

If I had a business called Grimp's Hot Dogs, made a coin called Grimp's Hot Dogs with my business address and a free hot dog with the token would it be okay?

Maybe Reverend Grimp and my churches name and address?

I would not think so, but that is my opinion.

If it would be ok.... well... if the hot dogs are good... of course it would be ok! :) Just kiding my friend!

Well... I completely understand you! I just do not know if you can take it as a signature item or just becasue it is in use for comercial reasons too, it is not considered to be a sign. item!

On the other hand..... I hope oakcoins will forgive me, but they made the oakbucks, right? they are fantastic tokens that you can get and exchange them into geocoins (according to the face value) in events etc! It is a comercial token for sure! some geocachers leave them in caches... but I do not hear any complains for them, nbody is thowing them away... (I think...) ....So???

But I have to admit, I love these oakbucks!!! They are amazing!!! :anicute:

I am trying to find the series (where they 2 different of there are new ones?) but I only have the 2 different 1$ till now! :D

Just to clear up things, I am just making the questions so I can learn, ok?

We use to say... "you to the city only if you ask!".. :D

Just edit to say that...grimp... you have beautiful avantar!!! I love these strange animals!! :) I have seen them in a documantary.. they are so funny and intelligent!!! :) Actually... they look human and they are like they are smiling!! :D

I was hooked on the Meerkat Manor series for a while :D

:anicute: these series... where made for animal planet?? Was it when these lovely creatures were actually climping on the man who was there to study them, so they can watch better the area for enemies?? :)

Wooden coins, also known as wooden nickels, are signature items! Of course I am talking about the geocaching ones... there are other wooden nickels that they were made by a store, a bar... and with it you can go and buy something! :D

The oakbucks are made of metal! they are like geocoins!! you can see them here: http://www.oakbucks.com/

The other series of oakbucks were gold in color!

If this were simply a signature item, you could call it that.

But they are asking people to help promote their business without getting permission from Groundspeak to do so, using geocaching and geocachers.

I'll repeat what I stated above. They had permission for their geocoin design, but did the tokens without asking if it was OK to use geocaching to promote their business. So it is not merely a token, or signature item, it is a commercial promotion.

Gatoulis, I have been meaning to send some out to you, just because you make me smile in here.

Glad you got some.

Me, I'm planning on playing a game with them. I dropped 50, now I am collecting them when I find them again ... then I am going to mark them and drop them again, and see who finds them after that or if I find them after that again.

Oh my dear friend!!!

And only that you mention that, is like you did it!!! :) Thank you so much!!!

Oh, I wish I could play too so I can earn the coin, but it is only for USA! I live far far away!

Hmm.. nice idea!!! Mark the tokens and see where they will go, who will pick them....

I remember when I went to Spain, in 1999! I had some double peseta coins in my collection, so I took them to use them there! One of them was a 25 pesetas coin! Just for a joke, I scratched my initials on it! It was like I would leave something for the memory of the first time (and till now the only one) I was visiting an other country! I spend the coin the first day I went to Spain! when time to leave came (after 3 or 4 days), I went to the Duty free shop to buy some gifts for the family! guess what! I took in change the 25 pesetas!!!! I was laughing! I could see the N S on it and I was sure that that was fate! the coin wanted to come back!!! :D Unfortunatelly I didn't keep the coin for too long! I should had!

My girlfriend at that time wanted the coin which had a hole in the middle, to wear it in her neck! I gave it to her.... and I lost the coin for ever... some months later, I lost her too! the relationship ended!...maybe I should had asked the coin back, even if that would sound.... not so nice.....

I CITO them. nothing like finding an altoids tin stuffed with these that means theres no room for a potential small tb or geocoin drop. even the geocoin is pretty much an ad for ESP.

I found my first token tonight. I think a majority of the problem lies in the fact that they snuck the tokens in without Groundspeak's blessing. Another problem is how misleading the tokens are. I brought along a brand new cacher on this trip and he was so excited to see a token for a "free" geocoin. When we brought it home, he realized the site is having cachers write articles and full content for them at the cost of just one geocoin for every 5-10 articles you write. You have to write about an official camping location that hasn't already been written about. This company is getting free advertising and free content creation. If they are really genuinely trying to use these tokens to incorporate geocaching into their business, why make people jump through so many hoops? Why not just have us write one article or even our own personal experience about an already featured site? The answer is because this venture is purely commercial hiding behind a facade of trying to adopt geocaching into the business. I could understand a company saying "Hey, look, I want to create tokens meant to promote myself and geocaching. Lucky finders will get a free geocoin for posting a story of their cache visit on our site." Something simple that Groundspeak knew about would have been much better. CITO.

I guess that they must have gotten the message that the tokens where not well received.... finally. :D I went to the first post on this thread just wanting to get info from the source, and now in order to get the free geocoin, you have to do a survey on 5 public campgrounds that haven't be review, and also submit 5 photos per campground. This sounds more like something I would be interested in doing if I had time, and overall would be a more well liked way to get a free coin from this company.

GC2D24Y - Using your "ESP!"

Have fun with this one.... :anibad: I actually was albe to find a way to make a puzzle out of tokens others have been collecting from other caches. The best part about it is the puzzle will actually get harder as it gets older because of cachers dropping (up to 5) their tokens in the ESP box.

Now granted I am in Pennsylvania and I had received my tokens (and then coins) after following the rules set forth. I receive the newsletter from ESP and find alot of the stuff in there informative, plus some of the recipes are pretty tasty. I see no difference in the tokens as saying we will have our "Event" at a local eatery or other type of buisness. That is also the same as advertising for a corperation. Or when you have a cache with SBUX in the title. We all know that means Starbucks, but isn't that advertising? I was not happy when my cache was originally declined because I had made a reference to the tokens in the decsription, but understood and I changed it and it got posted.

Just my $0.02, but I'm just another cacher that just enjoys the game. See you on the trail.
