joecacher's many moods COINTEST

Boom!pa

Recommended Posts

Seems fitting to have a cointest like this as its always fun to hear caching stories from friends! Caching is also the thing that got all of us out here in the first place!

Caching has brought on many moods from good to...errrr...not so good!

This cointest is easy. To enter, simply choose one of joecacher's many moods (from the 6 moods on the coin, to see it click >>>joecacher's many moods thread) and relate it to a short caching story that fits that mood! The only stipulation is that you have to choose a different mood then the previous post!

One entry per person.

Cointest runs to August 13th (our lucky number!)

ps. I will be on holidays for the next 2 weeks as the family is flying to Quebec from British Columbia. Why is this of interest to you? I will release 2 joecacher coins (one from boomerangpapa and one from highmaintenance) in different caches to race back home. Just thought we would let people know if they wanted to read our joeBlog to follow our coins race. Anyone picking up the coin and moving it (not just discovering it!) will also be entered into a draw to win a coin!

Where are you going in Quebec?

argh.jpg

I will pick this mood. There is a notorious cache near where I used to live in Quebec called Une medium-sagnante pour Sevy (GCV4BY). It takes people a long to find and usually numerous visits to the cache site. My other half finally found it, when I was not there and he will not tell me where it is. This is what he wrote for the 'found it'.

They say you're small, your size not great.

Our search for you made us irrate.

I found you today, sans PengoMommy.

I won't tell her where ... I think that's funny.

A grumpy smile is all I got, she asked again ...

I said .... Not.

A surprise for me she said with glee ...

'Tonight, you shall not see'.

'Alright', I said with an awkward grin.

But, still I know this battle, I won't win.

All's fine for now, all is okay ...

Because tonight, when I do pray ...

and have PengoMommy cuddled up to me,

I won't be having dreams of that bloody tree.

The end.

This is for Paktika Jingle Cache (GC1GRGF) Afghanistan: February 16 2009 DNF, May 25 2009 FTF.

It's February and cold in Afghanistan you know.

I hunted high and low, but there was still snow.

Another DNF log then I had to go.

I'm in the U.S. Army as you know.

CaptMorgan2 a false logger - all the time.

Edit your fake find.

Or I will have to drop a dime.

In May I return.

This time, not to be burned.

A First To Find is always swell!

But it is Memorial Day as well.

So let's all honor those who fell.

I do not know what mood I can really put in this story!

Almost all fit!! The found it, the Read the hint, the one last look, the DNF...

Anyway.. Since we finally found the cache, I will put the found it! :)

There was a new cache in my island! It was a multi stage cache, placed in a very pretty place! Unfortunatelly, it is extremelly hot if you deside to go in midday!

Since it was far away from my home, I couldn't go in the morning!

Hmm... even in the morning it is hot there!!! :D

I had seen that some geocachers had found this cache, and a cacher had placed in it a non trackable alaska 2005 coin! I have the 2006 one and it is one of the most beautiful coins I have ever seen, so the first thing I did was to search to see how this 2005 coin looked like!!!

WOW!!! It was amazing and quite big! I wanted it!!! It was going to be an other find of a cache and a great coin to trade! I had some good things to trade for!

I am not driving, so I had to wait for my brother in law, when he had a day off from his work , so we can go! 2 weeks had passed! none had visited the cache to take the coin!!! Oh boy!!!! ;)

The day to go and find it came! I was so happy! We were going out, all the family, for a swim and a pick nic, so I had to wait until the afternoon!

Before we leave, I had checked the caches page... no log.... good!!! :D

Swimming was great, food was exellent but I just had mails in my...

When we desided to leave, I realised that it was late!!! Oh my.... will we have time to go and find the cache??

We went there, we left our parents in the parking area to see the view, (the view was great from there!), and we started walking and completing the stages! My brother in law, was taking photos too!

come on... it is getting dark!!! I was saying.

In one of the photos, I realised that 2 women were coming back from the cache area! Oh.... they looked like geocachers, but were they?? aFter them, I saw 5 men carring a fish!!! But we were on a mountain.... What??? We said hello to all!

We continued and we realised that there was a small beach hidden in our way! You had to climp a little to go down to the beach, but it was a nice one! :D

I was thinking that the coin was gone! Well.... I was dissapointed but at least I was goinf to find the cache!!! :D

Huh! Nope! I didn't! when we finished the second stage, it was dark already! We had to go back! So close....

We did not have anything except my mobile flash for the photos, to see the path! We managed to go back but I wanted now to find the cache! We will come again, very soon!!!

Oh yes! It was very soon! My sister was saying to me all the time that the coin was still out there! I was sure it wasn't, but... ;)

That night and the next, I checked the site... no log again! hmm... cound this be true??

after 2 days we went there again! we finished all stages and now we had to find the cache! Where was it???? we searched all the place but nothing!!! I had the spoiler photo with me, just in case!!! It was getting dark once again and We couldn't find the cache!!! I was tired so I sat on a rock to rest a little and see the beautiful view! My brother in law asked me to give him the spoiler for a seconf look! When he saw it he started laughing!!

why are you laughing??? I asked!

I am laughing because you are siting on the rock the cache is hidden!!!

HUH???????????????? :D

Oh yes! we found it!!! :D The coin was not inside! The 2 women were geocachers! I wish I had known that for sure so I could at least see the coin! anyway!!! I was so happy that we found this cache!!!!! So happy!!!

Inside there were 2 pins! I trade for them! ;) I loged and we took the way back! when we reached the parking area it was dark!

Since we were tired and with sweat...we went for a night swim at the beach it was there! WOW!!! Great idea!! :D

when I loged my find in the site, I contact with the women too! they were very friendly! Unfortunatelly, they were not in my island anymore! :P I wish I had met them sooner!

Even if my mood changed for a while because of the coin, I was extremelly happy for finding the cache!!! It was a great chance to see a beautiful place in my island that I had never visited before!!! that is why I choosed the "found it" mood! :D

In case you want to see the cache area and the view.....

We rely on the "One Last Look". My wife and I have a rule that either of us can "call" a search off for any reason, but we are allowed a short one last look ,as long as it happens before we get back to the car. Sometimes we find the cache , others times we don't and we occasionally both employ it, one after the other. I think our record was 3 last looks by myself and 2 last looks by my wife before we accepted the call and drove away with a DNF.

This one is mine, all mine.

The last cache I did GC17122 "Using 17 Digits to See the Twelve", a puzzle cache that thankfully the cacher has posted hints to help solve.

Solve I did and rushed out to find, found myself in a swamp. I decided that this was not were it was to be, the 5 logs that I had with me mentioned additional required information, which I did not have on hand, that was attempted #1.

#2 a week later got me closer to the cache but now I was searching a very big area about 300 ft away from solved puzzle, on a lunch break, I decided that I still did not have enough information and contemplated using the PAF card (phone a friend) who had done it 2 years ago. Left fustrated but determined to get a cache that day, I did, an easier one thank you.

#3 The next day equipped with 2 gps's, lap top, I thought of getting a Bloodhound but the wife said no, I proceeded to a point 90m (270 ft) it a direct line and turned every stone (which was another hint I missed earlier. #3 was the charm, I'd like to think I'm determined, reasonable but I won't argue if someone calls me suborned.

Oohhh and the PAF card, still have it, figured he wouldn't remember where it was hidden anyway

I'll go on this one. I did a cache in Elizabethtown, KY on the suggestion of a forumite 'Making the Connection' (GCHNF5) that requires the use of a cell phone....and not a software type thing....you have to use it for it's primary use.

Anyway, one of the stages referenced a company that was out of business and the sign I needed was gone. So I had to brute force the correct answer to get to the next stage. I get to the final connection, and I realize I hadn't written down some pieces that I needed to solve it. But luckily I remembered it and got to GZ. I was quite happy with that one. When I saw where GZ was, and seeing how it related to the cache itself...I had to laugh a bit.

(You are working through a message answering service...GZ was within a decent distance of the company that set it up.)

Here is my log from a night cache that the kids and I went on...Let me tell you this "mood" suits it perfectly by the time we made it out of the woods. I made alot of rookie mistakes and learned alot from this, but all in all, despite how crazy, frustrated, freaked out, etc... that it made us, we had made it into a good time.

GCKAGM "Quest for Gold(Mountainfolk206's Gold Ammo Can)

March 6 by TEAM HARTSOCK (120 found)

Well, this cache turned very interesting....

I have wanted to do this one since before Mountainfolk found it. Finally, I get the idea that since the boy and I had so much fun doing the Birthday Cache in the dark the night it was put out, I would take him and the girls and we would head off to find this one after dark. Got to parking, jumped out of the car and headed up the trail. We got to the point the trail goes down hill and I mean down hill. We had a great view, however (and I still don't know how we did this, but we missed something in the dark) we got to a place where the cache was pointing off to the right a little over a tenth of a mile, so I tell the kids let's bushwack. We fight briars and mountain laurel and are within 500 feet of the cache when I realize we are at the bottom of the overlook and the cache is up top. So we started to try to find our way to the left to find a way up...no way in sight, so to the right....nope, we do the only thing we can do...crawl straight up the mountain. Took us about 45 minutes for myself, my oldest daughter (15), son (11) and youngest daughter (10). We get to the top after a long struggle and are rewarded with finding the cache. Then we start to follow the trail which I assumed is where we were suppose to come in on.

Trail turns into a hunting path, which turns into a deer path, which sudddenly becomes a sea of mountain laurel. When we go to backtrack we are faced with a zigzaging pattern of deer trails. at this point I realize that I had messed up in setting to co-ords where we left the truck and didn't have them in the handheld cause I use the Nuvi to get to parking co-ords when I can. After an hour of trying to even find our way back to the cache, I realize that with my kids out here, it could be dangerous. One of them could fall and get hurt, or I could and then they would be stuck....so when I exhaust all other options, I make the call to 911. The police will come to the truck location and then blow the sirens so we can find our way back. Great, we are only 1.5 miles or so from the truck so this will work.

It didn't work with the echo at first. led us in the wrong direction. I thought we were due to the GPS readings, but I was trusting the 911 guy. At that point, I text my wife and tell her that we are lost in the woods. Yes, I did the cowardly thing and texted instead of calling. We went in at 7:30 found cache about 9:00 and it was now 11:00.

So we get straightened out with where the siren is coming from and head toward it. This takes us through mountain laurel as thick as any I have ever seen, down the side of a mountain that was still covered in ice which took all of us holding onto the laurel and trees to make it down; then cross a stream, and more mountain laurel now 6 foot high. Only benefit was some of it we could kinda walk under.

At this point it was taking us an hour to go about .15 miles. And I was still uncertain with the whole, follow the siren thing. So, I call 911 back for about the 20th time ("hello 911, please state the nature of your emergency." "umm...yeah, this is Scott Hartsock again...the guy lost in the woods with his kids." "oh yeah, Hi Scott how's it going?" --- I kid you not.) And tell them again, I have a GPS unit, how about giving me the co-ords for where the police are right now? So they do and we head off in that direction. Again, all mountain laurel...really thick mountain laurel. Fire department guy asks me on the phone if we can see the moon. I said yeah, and he stated that we should keep it in front of us and walk toward it. Then 5 minutes later clouds roll in and the moon isn't seen the rest of the night.

We get within the distance that we can hear the cop over the loudspeaker, but GPS is bouncing like crazy and is hard to make way through all the laurel. Cell service was spotty, so that wasn't helping. We finally get to a small path and think we are making headway only to find out that the trooper is behind us to the left, so we make another b-line toward him...more bushwacking. We get so far and stop for a rest. I sat on a log which broke and dumped me to the ground and as I laid there, I called 911 to see if there was any update of where we were and where the cops were. Talk to them a little and then talk to the trooper again that is up somewhere ahead of us, then talked to one of the men from the fire department that came in as a rescue squad. Set up the thing where we are going to stay put and they will come to our location to get us. Just as we are finalizing that....cell phone battery goes dead. GREAT!!!! So the kids and I follow our last instructions and sit there for about 20 minutes.

I can tell that eventhough it is a nice night and eventhough that they have had a great attitude up to this point that sitting there was eating away at them. I would have been content to sit for 2 hours till daylight (it was 3:40 by this time...I think, since cell went dead I didn't have a watch on.) But I knew that staying would break their spirits, so we got up and heading toward the direction of where the cop was to be. As we walk along about .10 of a mile or so, we finally see a light. As we yell and head toward it, we get an answer. It was the guy who I had talked to on the phone from the fire department. So we were rescued and home at 4:30 (only about a 10 minute drive to our house.)

The kids did great, I was very proud of them. I took some pics which I will post on here shortly, but all in all they did great, even if they all have refused to ever go night-caching again.

The boy summed it all up though when he said "at least there was one good thing about tonight. At least we found the cache!" THAT'S MY BOY!!!!!

Eventhough we worried their mother to death and were in a little danger (I told the kids what those noises were after we made it to the truck ---- coyotes do make the strangest sounds at time.), I feel this was a real bonding experience for us all. Showed them that no matter what happens, as long as we stick together and as long as you never give up, you can accomplish anything. It also taught me to double check the waypoint of where you parked the vehicle.

TFTC!!! This is going to be probably the most memorable one for the longest time.

dropped 2 coins and retrieved 2 TBs

If you go there to the page and look up my log, you can see the pics of us on our "adventure"....Thanks for the Cointest!

Caching has brought on many moods from good to...errrr...not so good!

Well... have we got a story for you! :) Includes all the moods in one. :)

Not sure which to use for mood posting requirements, but I guess it fits anywhere. ;)

However... it got a lil long-winded & we added pics for enhancements, so...

We decided to do it up on our blog, rather than here.

If this is unacceptable, please let us know, & we can repost it here, as well.

Very cute design, by the way! :D Thanks for the cointest!

I refer to the „one last look“. It was so funny!

I did a multi-cache with 4 other cachers on Whitsunday. (Here's the link to the cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...=y&decrypt= )

The final was on a big bridge in a big city and because the cachebox was hidden 35 metres away from the right coordinates, we searched for a long time on the bridge.

Suddenly a man appeared on the bridge, passed us by, looked attentively and suddenly stopped. He came to us and asked: “What are you doing here? I am from the security from the German Railways and we observed you with our cameras.”

Immediately zwingenbaer interrupted and said:”Ah yes? You observed us with cams??? Now tell me, where are the written hints on that bridge that passengers are filmed??? You are not allowed to film people without a written hint at the location. That’s paragraph xy (note by sterni2009: he told the right paragraph of the law, he is used to those things, but I do not remember the paragraph). May I see your ID card?”

The security man that had just been a busybody now became calm. He showed us his Security ID card and told us: “Errrrrrr uuuum uuuum, we have the cameras in our security car that we can park everywhere and on the cameras we saw you… you know, uuuum uuuuuuum, there are graffiti sprayers… you wear backpacks… I just wanted to know…”

While he was talking, one of us held his GPS on the bridge and said: “Actually this bridge would have to be disabled…” The security man should get the impression that we are from a department that is responsible for the security of bridges.

All the others got the hint and zwingenbaer told the security man, that we are there to scale the vibration of the bridge and that the devices in our hands (our GPS devices!) are the devices for scaling the vibrations. :D

Suddenly the security man became hand-tame, he believed everything and thought that we are from a department that is hierarchical higher than he is. Now he was the “little man” that was afraid of disturbing the very important person from the department :D

While zwingenbaer was talking with the security man, the others left to the edge of the bridge because they had to laugh out loudly. :D

Suddenly a car stopped on the bridge, the window pane was opened, a face of a young man appeared and he asked me: “Are you cachers???” I said: “Yes, we are!” He: “I’ve just found that cache, too, so I thought I stop because I thought that you were cachers.” Me: “Very nice! Can you please tell us where we can find the cachebox? We searched at the coordinates and many metres away, but there was nothing!” He: “You must look under the handrail.” Then another car appeared an he had to leave. I said thank you and found the whole situation very funny. The security man realized nothing :(

Zwingenbaer still was talking to the security man who told him that we have to scale the vibrations of some other bridges, too, because they had too many vibrations :( He believed everything, even told us where we have to scale other bridges!!! :D:blink:

Meanwhile two muggles (a couple) had passed the bridge and listened to the talk between zwingenbaer and the security man. The guy wasn’t as naïve as the security man and immediately knew that the GPS devices in our hands WEREN’T devices for scaling the vibrations of the bridge :D.

Sometime later we told the security man that we would have to come again with bigger devices for scaling the vibrations :D. He believed it like he believed everything and left :D. He thought that the mission of "our department" must have been very important because the department appeared with five people on Whitsunday :D:mad:

So we could continue to take one last look for the cache box and, 35 metres off, there it was.

The muggles had started to talk to one of our group because they wanted to know what’s going on. The couple was very cool and nice and interested, so we told them about geocaching and showed them the cachebox. They were excited and also wanted to start geocaching. Together, we all laughed about the whole funny situation. That was such a cool day!!! :D :D :D

And you can see how that typical kind of person that thinks he is very strong and important (the security man) suddenly changes his whole behaviour when he thinks the other person is hierarchically higher than him :DB)

I will refer to the FOUND IT! mood.

We have not been caching for too long. only a few months. But when we first started, we loaded up our car gpsr and hit the road....we have a 10 month old son, so we couldnt do anything too hard for some of our first caches....Now we all know how well the car gpsr's work for geocaching.....Not well at all. Anyway, we never cached before, so we werent too sure what we were even looking for. We got to the first spot of the day, and looked around for a while.....Nothing!! What the heck, we thought, it is saying it should be here, and I dont see anything...Keep in mind, we still didnt even know what we were looking for! My son was hanging onto me, in one of those back pack things....He was falling asleep, so we couldnt be out there much longer. We hit up a couple of the caches that we loaded onto the gpsr, and had no luck with them either....I looked at my wife, and thought maybe this game was some sort of a joke, that there really isnt anything there. So we decided to pack it in for the day, and go home and get some more information on geocaching, and try again another day....But before we did that, I said, let's just try for one more! looking over at our son, who is not fast asleep, we decided on one that was very near our house. We get to the spot, my wife stayed in the car with our son, and I ran out into the woods. 5 min. later, I saw something...I didnt pick it up, I ran back to the car, and grabbed my wife, and our son, and I said, I think I found it!!! I wanted us all to be together for our first ever first find! So we get back to the spot, i let my wife peek around, and she saw it also. we then went over to the spot, and grabbed our first cache!!! We FOUND IT!!! It was a great day, because then when we got home, we logged our first find, read up on caching a little bit, and then headed out, and grabbed the other ones that we didnt see the first time out! we were instantly hooked on the sport, and have been caching ever since....and about a week after we started, we invested the money in a new gpsr!

I will refer to this mood argh.jpg because it's the look mom and I both had during one of our cache outings.

We hadn't paid much attention to the terrain rating on a new hide and we were determined to get the FTF. When we got there mom rushed out of the car to beat me to the cache while I was busy getting some swag out of the back of the car. Imagine standing by the back of your car and all of a sudden you hear a yell and see your mother disappear! I leaped the guardrail and made it to the top of the hill in time to see my 65 year old mother go bounce, roll, bounce, roll, bounce to the bottom of the hill! Fortunately, it wasn't a very long hill but it was steep and all rock and gravel. I didn't want to land on top of her so I was trying to find some solid footing and asked if she was OK. All she said was "Nope!" and then she burst into laughter so I knew she really was! I finally made it down the hill (still on my feet!) and helped her up. She had a few bruises but after the tumble she took it's amazing nothing was broken! She did do a number on the screen of the GPS but it still worked and she was determined to find the cache! We got the FTF and a whole lot of laughs and I learned that my mom is a lot tougher than I give her credit for! We went back up to that area a week ago and laughed over the whole thing again, especially since she refused to get anywhere near the edge of the hill!

I cannot get my image to appear, but it would be the little green guy!

After a weekend of rain my father and I were looking for a cache near Black Creek, which is actually misleading seeing as it's more of a very deep river. Anyway, the GPS sent us to the south bank. There was a nice path so we began walking down it when suddenly there was a very large and deep ditch that even an olympic jumper would having trouble getting across. But being the cachers we are, we found a way ... kind of. I was thinking of climbing across a large tree that had fallen across the ditch, my father decided to brave the briars and walk up the ditch a little. Needless to say he found a nice little bridge and crossed without the splinters.

Once over the ditch the GPS continued to point us east, so along we continued. While walking I turned to answer a question my father had posed, and when I turned around a rather large spider web decided to jump out at me and attack! After a started noise I then backed into my dad and nearly sent him tumbling to the ground. He, not knowing what had happen and thinking I'm hurt, began trying to stop me from slapping my face so he could see where the injury was.

It is at this time I should mention that this cache was one of our first, and at the time nature and I had never really seen eye to eye. We were still learning to tolerate one another, and trust was a big issue.

After explaining about the attacking web we continued until the GPS finally decided to inform us that we were on the wrong side of the creek ... stupid GPS! So we began to backtrack, and 1/2 mile later we were back at the bridge. We walked to the other side and took what looked like a deer path down and along the creek. The path evenutally began leading back into the woods and briars. Another 1/2 mile later we were in the middle of the woods looking for a cache. The only thing we knew about this cache was it was large and we couldn't miss it!

After 10 minutes of looking I happened to go around to the other side of a large tree, when I spotted it. I called dad over and told him I thought I had found it. After he approached he began to grin. The cache that we couldn't miss ... an approx 20 gallon bucket painted black with a neon orange lid about 3 ft off the ground. The bucket had been attached to the tree. Dad told me to go ahead and get it down since I had found it, so I did. Unfortunately I had forgotten all about the rain. As I lifted the bucket out of its holder I leaned it torward me for leverage, and received a nice shower for my effort. All the water that had been collecting on the lid landed on my head! As you can imagine my father fell to the ground with laughter, and all I could do was glare at him.

We signed the log, replaced the cache, and headed back to the car. Along the way the temptation to push him into the creek was strong, but I resisted the urge (only because we happened to have mom's car and even I'm not that stupid). We made it back to the car without a problem, however, dad kept laughing every time he looked at me! Once at the car I noticed something crawling on me. I asked dad what it was and he told me it was a tick. Being the city girl I was, I very calmly began jumping and screaming "get it off me, get it off me". Dad being the hero that he is brushed it away and I was once again "safe".

Just to let everyone know since this incident nature and I have formed a deep bond. I love walking in the woods and being outside. I can still be a "city girl" at times but now I tend to accept nature and all of those that live there. Although I still HATE ticks I don't scream anymore, and as long as I geocaching I don't mind the creepy crawlers.

Thanks for this cointest and for bringing back this memory. I was smiling the whole time I wrote this! And I'm sorry for any spelling errors. I never was good at it without spell check. [;P]

We went out last week to find some new caches with the whole family. Took the time to load all the bikes in the geovan and on the bikerack. Drive about 20 miles to get to a park to find some caches and get on a nice bike trail. Well 3 of the bikes are brand new and need some air in the tires. Stop on the way and fill them all up, about 40 psi each (recommended to 50 psi), none too high. Get back in the van, only about 2 miles from the park. One mile further down the road and BOOM!! What the heck was that? We pulled over to check the van. A tire on one of the bikes blew. No biking today. We still decided we could check out the park and find a few caches there. Nice park. Got out and started down a trail to find a cache. Watching the deer in the park and didn't see the depression on the trail. Dad hits it hard and down he goes. Twisted his ankle. So much for walking on the trail. Decided it was best to go home. No finds here, frustrating day. Still need a few to get to 2000.

Congrats Pumpkinking27! An update our log. We went out again today to find the same series of caches after replacing the innertube on the one bike. Well we had to stop to put air in the new tube and guess what - This one blew too. Luckily we found a bike shop open and had them put in another new inner tube and we were able to take the family biking and find some caches today.

I am sorry I have been so late in posting on here, but we are doing some remodeling on our house, so things are a bit crazy....anyway, we got the coin and zipper pull and all we can say is, WE LOVE THEM!!! what an awesome coin...It's page is under construction right now, but we will be posting some pictures of it soon. Thanks again, we appreciate it, and we will cache you later.
