magellan315 Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 I'm thinking about getting a GPS for my car and I really don't know anything about them. If anyone has any recommendations on models to look at I'd appreciate it. I'm on a budget so if its an older model I can pick up on E-Bay or reconditioned that would help Quote
NordicMan Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Well what is your budget limit? And, did you want to Geocache with it as well, or just car navigation? You can get a Lowrance XOG brand new for around $150 that does the car voice navigation thing (includes all of North America maps!) also it is weatherproof so, works OK as a Geocaching tool too Quote

I have no familiarity with car based GPS so I am open to suggestions Quote
+Knight2000 Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 I use a TomTom One3rd. I bought it about a year ago for $80 delivered. You can probably get one now for $100. (I got an awesome price.) I use GSAK to load my geocaches in it. I am very happy with it. I have not used anything else. I can say that I have used my TT a lot and never been directed toward any weird ways or back roads. +Jeep4two Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 My wife just won a Nuvi 255wt (255w with lifetime traffic) and it's great so far. I've use the Nuvi macro for GSAK to load caches on as custom POI's to give the full cache details (less photos, and only last 5 logs) and its great. I set a .2 mile proximity warning and I'm ready to go with my Oregon when I hear the Nuvi ding. The navigation so far is good, the traffic stuff works good so far (got me out of a 20 minute wait in construction on Sunday) and has plenty of features. It's not a geocaching friendly unit which means it not water resistant, rugged to withstand hard drops, and doesn't have a compass/bearing screen, but it could do in a pinch if you found yourself without your handheld. Available for $139 at Newegg as a recertified unit (255w, no traffic antenna). The new ones run about $199. If you want super low cost, NewEgg has the TomTom One 130 recertified for $49.00 ($69.99, less a $20.00 mail in rebate). I've always had perfect ontime payments on rebates from newegg, and this is a newegg issued rebate from what I can tell. I can't vouch for TomTom personally but they do sell a lot of in car navi units. Here's the product link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16858194072 Quote
+Redwoods Mtn Biker Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I'd suggest the nuvi 255 (4.3" screen but no text-to-speech, so it won't call out street names) or the 205W (smaller screen, but you get text-to-speech). Both are around $150 at Amazon right now. Quote
Meckers Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I think you've made the right decision to get a car GPS for your car and a handheld for geocaching rather than try to get one unit that does it all. I don't know how anyone can navigate in a car with a small handheld screen. I use a simple but steady Explorist 210 for geocaching. I took the plunge about 9 months ago and bought a Garmin NUVI 350 (refurbished) on Ebay for about $115. It appears new in all respects. It has "text-to-speech" which means it actually speaks the street names for turns. I recommend this feature highly. You can also get a refurbished "Navigon 2100" on Ebay for around $70-$75 (shipped). This is a crazy price but I don't have any experience with Navigon. It seems to have all the desired features including text-to-speech. Good luck in your research. Again, good decision. Quote
